absolutely, Jim
here is what I learned the hard way. From my trail journal

7/28/09 – Up at 4:30 long before the 4:59 alarm has a chance. Ready to go at 5:30, but darkness still reigns. There is no need to brood waiting on the launch pad, so to speak, so I take off. Minutes later I am reluctant to pick my way over a rocky stream-crossing because of limited depth perception with the LED headlamp’s lavender light. So I sit, turn the headlamp off and wait. Dawn is already trying, so after just 10 minutes I feel comfortable to move, reaching the junction to Bench Lake an hour later. ]]>

Winter in the Uber is nice unless you need to cook/etc in a blowing storm. Maybe listen to Dave on that if you're expecting some weather.

FWIW - here are some trips I got out in with mine.

Winter Palisade Traverse Bail

If you don't have a sleeping bag with the "waterproof" shell like I do, Dave's light cover is a must for winter camping if you're in any kind of weather. You can carry it on the summit push as well for an emergency bivy. It's almost impossible to avoid snow/condensation from getting all over everything, unless you're carrying a 10 pound double-wall 4 season tent. We go single wall tent typically (if not in the Uber), so condensation is a problem. Sleeping bag = happy with a protective cover if you've got a marginal shell material.

I sold shoes for 7 years in my 'ute; therefore, I know good deal about quality footwear. These are good boots compromised by a poor quality sock.

If I had purchased this pair from STP they would have been in the mail back to them on Monday, since their return policy is the same as REI's.

I have contacted eVent a few times on this matter and they've been less than helpful, to the point I called GE and GE Energy, both of which had no clue they made a waterproof breathable product or had a wholly owned subsidiary by the name of eVent.

Based on my experience, I would never purchase eVent clothing or footwear for extreme conditions. Both times they leaked was in the spring conditions like Saturday. I worn these boots because they are more comfortable for long approaches than my La Sportiva Trangos, which means they are wet most of the day. I have never had this type of problem with Gore-Tex, jackets, pants or boots.]]>

That's good to know about their baskets. It used to be they had a little post sticking out, and you gave the basket a quarter turn to lock it in place.
same system we have on the REI poles, however, they are almost impossible to into the locked position, and even harder to release. Maybe a matter of plastic density or molding differences.

this from the NPS news feed about the Rainier incident
Mount Rainier National Park (WA)
Search Efforts Aided By Good Weather

A break between storms provided a weather window for significant ground and air operations in the search for two missing parties yesterday. Three aircraft conducted a major air search of the upper mountain including Ingraham, Cowlitz, and Paradise glaciers, the Muir Snowfield, and the summit. Air resources include an Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter, a contract Bell 206 helicopter with RECCO from Northwest Helicopters, and a Washington State Patrol Cessna fixed wing with forward looking infrared. Seven ground teams searched the Sluiskin Falls area, Lower Paradise Glacier, Upper Stevens Canyon above Lake Louise, and Mazama Ridge. No sign of the two parties has been found over the seven day search period. The park is beginning to scale back the operation into an extended limited continuous search. Searches of remote areas of the park will be conducted when weather conditions permit in hopes that the parties were able to walk out. Search operations will not be conducted today due to expected winter storm conditions on the mountain. Forty-six NPS, VIP and AD personnel are currently assigned to the incident. The Western Incident Management Team (Denny Ziemann IC) is managing the incident. Operations will transition back to the park tomorrow.
[Submitted by Patti Wold, IO]
the thing about Recco is that it's cheap to add to gear and it is passive. Low tech, definitely no unique code or any of the complexity of Spot and other beacons. Drawback is that I bet very few search teams have the search tool, which is most likely very expensive.
