I have not been climbing because of a medical problem I have been having.

I thought you might be interested to watch a medical procedure I had done last week at UCLA and CBS filmed it.

It will air this Thursday on The Doctors TV Show. Locally (LA and OC) it is channel 9 at 11 AM. The show is called "How Heat Can Change Your Life" For other areas go to The Doctors and click the tab to get the time and channel for your area http://www.thedoctorstv.com/

They did not cover my rare disease story because of time and it wasn't the focus of that segment. Hopefully, my Everest summit picture holding the NORD banner will be shown.

DISCLAIMER: I have no idea how it has been edited and I am more than a little apprehensive about how it will be presented.

If you watch it let me know what you think.

But, I'm back to the hills this weekend!!!!!!

Steve, I just watched it. If you go to The Doctors you can watch it from your computer. My segment is about 10 minutes into the show.

I couldn't find the show, but I did find in the "Most Recent" tab on their Video Library page, two "back pain procedure" videos.

One with a picture of the patient in a surgery cap (is that you?) looks like the video. (length 1:11)

Is that the one?

"Don't be a hero." wink

Steve, Good find. That is part of the segment. There is another part where they show me talking and include many climbing pictures (mostly Everest) and one of me diving in Iceland. Maybe the whole segment will be acessable when they archive this week's shows.

"Damaging the nerves that send pain messages to the brain" Wow that is aggressive. How is it working out for you? Had you tried the facet blocks prior and had good results therefore went for a more permanent type of nerve block?
Ever try conservative treatment like Chiropractic or Accupuncture? Stuff like destroying nerves always worries me when you block the pain signals to the brain. It also affects the propioceptive nerve fibers(position sense nerves)that can affect balance and posture.
Hope you find relief from your back pain. I know how debilitating it can be.
Interesting show.You are our star.

Hi Rod,

I agree with you. For years I had tried all those things your mentioned; and yes, this was an aggressive move. But I did a lot of research before I put myself under the probes.

The nerves they went after have had no noticable effect on my muscle control or balance - which is always a concern!

This was the third round of this procedure. The doctor takes it slow and monitors results and any side effects. UCLA has some truly amazing and caring doctors!

Thanks for the "Star" comment but I am just trying to help people realize the importance of following their dreams, to believe in themselves, and live full lives.

The people on this board already know the importance of these things. smile

Hi Cindy,

I watched you on TV last night. You're very good speaker in front of the camera (and on stage at REI). I liked the point you made about how you've been in pain for 8-years, but were able to reach the summit of Mt. Everest; however, it's painful for you to get out of bed in the morning. You're back pain and reaching the summit of Mt. Everest is a good example of how powerful the mind is over the body. I recently read a post on the Whitney Portal site where people totally ragged on bobcat for mentioning mental over physical. If you have the time, you should post a link to your video on the Doctors to that post to give those who posted on that thread something to think about. Science is the key to proving or dis-proving theories, not people's opinions; however, some people did post articles that are from reputable sources, so they did have science backing up their opinions. I still think your video is a good example of the power of the mind over the body.

Cindy, I enjoyed watching you on the Doctors. Thank you for letting the WZ know your procedure would air this week.

Lynn

The thread is by "bobcat" on the Whitney Portal board.

The name of the thread is:

JuAltitude Sickness: Mental or Physical?

I don't undertstand the term: JuAltitude, do you?

Had a great Sunday. Climbed for the first time in two months and checked out the results of my back-pain procedure. I'd say it's 85% better smile

Bill Burke (oldest American to summit Everest, 2009) organized a group hike of about 16 people (including two other Everest summiter's Paul and Denise who were on my summit team) then we met-up with another group of climbers(forum friends).

It was a white-out with 50 MPH winds at the summit, but we all still had a great time.

It's great to be back on the mountain smile smile smile

HAHA, You know I can't add pictures but Steve said I can send some to him, so I will. Just downloaded some from my camera that I though was frozen but it worked! Pictures of the white-out on the summit and me holding a Ding Dong (AKA: birthday cake with a candle that would'nt stay lite) something about high winds smile

PS Mt. Baldy of course!!!

Wagga, do you have pictures posted of you at the summit of Mt. Whitney? Just curious.

From back in the day when you had to kill a million silver molecules for a pixel, I have 2-1/4" transparencies of me leading Shaky Leg, nothing else.
