Alas, Tioga Pass is closed for the season... Y'all on the "BEaSTern" side of the Sierra Nevada be safe as those who live on the "WesteRnONG" side live vicariously through your TR and pictures. There ain't no way I am driving down through B-field. No offense to the residents there. We just don't like the drive from Coarsegold to B-field via the 99. The only "99" we want to be on is the switchers. Okay, 97. Give or take a couple of right angles. But there is plenty to do here on the Westend. Here's to 2010. Can't wait until February 1, 2010 when it is time to submit for the lottery. Have fun.
Journey well...

I know that this IS the Whitney Zone site, but I still feel that all of those East side peeps should be the ones mourning being locked outta Yosemite!!

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Oh well... So that means it's time to go find the skis and boots in the garage, and buy new batteries for the sleds.
I'm hoping for an east-side trip this winter.

If you live south enough you have equal access to both the east and western Sierras including MW and Yosemite. Plus I am 45 minutes from the beach.Nanner nanners.

Like Tom, I live nearby in Inyokern, so I have easy access to some great hiking.
And ... I'm RETIRED!!! nanner, nanner, nanner, nanner. Let's see someone top THAT!
Unlike Tom's truck though, mine does go south occasionally. I love Baldy as a winter climb once there's enough snow/ice to do it with crampons. And, I like Jacinto and Big Iron because they're butt-kickers. However, I'm usually headed in/out under the cover of darkness, so can avoid most of the heavy traffic.
My hat's off to those of you who live/commute in SoCal. I don't know how you do it.

There are a lot of nanner, nanners here.
Well, this past Thanksgiving I was up in Mammoth, driving over from Oakland via 50 to 89 to 395. It took me about 6 1/2 hours. On the way back after the storm hit Mammoth on Friday night and all day Saturday, I ended up taking 395 south to the 178 and 99 north to the 152 and 5. With all the stops, the drive took me nearly 10 hours.
I retire February 1 after 39 years at the University of California. My thoughts are to retire to Bishop and become a "nanner, nanner, nanner" type.

Paul, you won't be the first person to retire to all that great scenery. And I have always heard it pronounced "Neener neener".

Congrats on your pending retirement, Paul. There was an article in the Sierra Wave about the storm, and what some felt was the "selective" enforcement of the chain requirement by the CHP, even for those individuals with 4x4 and snow tires. Seems why over the top, but this is California, after all. I was at Walker Pass (178) Sunday AM doing a short hike north on the PCT. Bishop's a nice place. Not too many towns where you can step out of the supermarket and look up and see a glacier. We moved from the east coast a few years ago, and looked at Bishop. At the time it was spendy, as people priced out of Mammoth were moving to Bishop, and some Bishop residents were in turn moving to Chalfont. A recent article in the Inyo Register indicated prices were now lower, however.

Tioga closed? Sad, but no prob for us on the Eastern side of the Sierra, right? Well, "east" is a very relative term . . .

Seems why over the top, but this is California, after all. I was at Walker Pass (178) Sunday AM doing a short hike north on the PCT. Ha! Over here on the west side, the CHP has been enforcing that "carry chains even if you have 4WD with M+S tires" rule for years. I have a set of tire cables that I throw in the back of the 4WD every trip -- just in case they're stopping and checking people. I guess the idea is that sometimes 4WD fails, so the chains are a backup. It does get bad, though. A few years back, I helped a guy with a van get it started using my jumper cables in the ski area parking lot. Then 20 miles later, came upon him again at a particularly icy section. An icy little storm had arrived, one pickup had nosed completely over the edge, all we could see was the tail end. The van driver couldn't even move past the accident scene. He was trying to turn sharp toward the center of the road, and every time he moved, his front end was sliding sideways toward the ditch. I had him turn toward the ditch and back up. That allowed the tires to roll back up-slope toward the center. Then he turned straight ahead and inched away. So I can understand when the CHP closes down a road due to cars "stacked like firewood."

It is shocking how many Californians have absolutely NO IDEA how to drive in ice/snow conditions.I love driving by front wheel drive vehicles with their chains on the rear tires. Can't say I blame CHP for enforcing chains etc.Another favorite to watch when cars are slightly stuck and the tires are spinning so they stomp on the acclerator.Knuckleheads everywhere.

It is shocking how many Californians have absolutely NO IDEA how to drive in ice/snow conditions. ice/snow!? They don't even know how to drive on WET roads. Every fall during the first rain of the season there's a slew of accidents. The road oils have been collecting all summer and the first rain results in slick roads.
