Mt Whitney Zone Forums General Discussion Whitney Clinics at REI

I will be conducting a clinic on hiking Mt. Whitney at REI in Tustin, CA on Jan. 12 at 6:00pm. This is mainly for 1st timers or for anyone wanting info on how to have a successful hike to the summit via the Main Whitney Trail. I will cover the permit/lottery process, trail descriptions, training, gear and nutrition. The clinic is a PowerPoint with plenty of photos. You must register on www.rei.com and the clinic is FREE. I've been conducting this clinic for 7 years, and have 5 summits in 5 attempts - 2 day hikes and 3 overnighters. I plan to give this clinic each month thru August. Spread the word! If you don't live near Tustin, check our other stores as others are giving the clinic also.

Do you give the clinics only at the Tustin REI, or other locations, too?

I work at REI Tustin so I just give the clinics at that location. REI in Huntington Beach gives clinics, also, but I'm not sure who is presenting there. REI tends to use employees at their work location to present clinics, but we ocassionally go to other REI's if they don't have a qualified presenter or if their presenter is ill or is unavailable for that evening. I might add that we all cover pretty much the same information, but tailor the presentation to what we feel our attendees will want. Mine is a PowerPoint that I created using my own photos and material that I have gathered over the years.
