I can ID Whitney, Russell, Thor, Horseshoe Meadows, can see a bit of the Portal Road, but don't know much else. I'm sure others can help me out.

Here's the whole panorama - Southern Sierra seen from Roger's Peak on 3-27-2011:

http://didnt.doit.wisc.edu/outdoor/panoramas/death_valley_02/sierra_view_stitch.html

The game is to find something you know, e.g. zoom into the view of a peak you can name, and click the "Save specific View" button. Come back to this thread, and post your view with comment

here for example is Mount Whitney

yeah, the forum doesn't auto-link to anything that doesn't have html in the back.

also - when using IE9, there's no pop-up with a link when you do want to get that view. So much for Microsoft's own code...

Well, it works perfectly for me, I can blow-up the panorama, I can move it, I can save a specific view, but then I'm lost. I copied the html line of code and pasted it, but only got a lot of what I would call 'Greek'...looks like Greek to me. Unless Steve C. helps me, I'm totally lost with all this code. There must be members of the Geek Squad on the WZ, because so many of you guys know how to do all this computer stuff.

That is what I meant Lynn when I said it didn't work. I can't get the image to appear on the forum but the link I made does work.

copy the URL, not the embed code, then click on the link icon (second one from the left), paste the URL into the dialog box, then in the second dialog the name of what you've zoomed in. That's how I did the Whitney link. If you just paste the link. it will not be clickable.

Here's how to imbed a view:

1. Pan, zoom, etc, until you have the view you want.

2. Click "Save Specific View"

3. On the little popup window, below the HTML to embed, click on the text that begins: <iframe...

4. Copy the selected text:  Ctrl C, or right-click & copy.

5. Paste into a posting window on this forum. You will see >15 lines of "Greek" grin

6. Optional: If you want to make the view window larger than the default 400 x 300, change the height and width numbers on the first line of the data. I've changed the numbers on the view below to width: 640px; height: 480px;

7. IMPORTANT: Below the posting window, change the "Markup" value to "using HTML and UBBCode". (That is what translates the Greek into Magic when you display your post.)

8. Submit your post.

...Good luck!

I did that about 5 times for the first post, every single time I got a "cannot load frame" - thought it was a crossdomains.xml issue, added the site to the permissions and still got nothing. Maybe I should have restarted the browser. Anyway, that works much better than my link approach.

A wider view from Telescope instead of Rogers, with compass bearings overlaid and labels on a few.

New York Butte (in foreground - based on Wayne's big named pano) I was off by a few peaks calling this Inyo Peak whistle

based on a straight line drawn on a google map from Rogers Peak across Mount Iny, one of the peaks behind Mt. Inyo should be Mount Pinchot.

Still trying to figure out what we are looking at at the far right end of the image. Those peaks are probably near Palisades

We need Wayne Pyle to look at everything. He's the expert identifying peaks in view.

I have a list of 245 peaks from the left side of the pano to the far right, with the topmost peaks ranging from about 38 miles away to 100 miles from Rogers Peak. For anyone using map programs, the compass spread from Rogers Peak is from about 268 degrees True North to 308 degrees TN, which is a 40 degree field of view. I don't have time right now, but maybe I can produce a pano with most, if not all, of the named peaks identified. I imagine quite a few of the peaks on my list are blocked by closer peaks, which will whittle down the number, but I need to spend a bit of time to ID the hidden ones.

I was able to whittle the list of 245 peaks down to 128. I annotated a jpeg of the panorama and sent it to SteveC for uploading. The pano begins on the left with Round Mountain (9,884 ft.) at 268 degrees TN and 55 miles away from Rogers Peak. On the far right is the Middle Palisade (14,012 ft.) at 308 degrees TN and 97 miles away.

Whoever made the pano did a great job.

Steve C.

Thank you for the instructions, I'll try them out soon and thanks for not making fun of my 'Greek' comment, but instead understanding what I was experiencing.

Wagga,

I believe I know what you mean when you ask which browser am I using. At home, I use Internet Explorer. I keep meaning to set my defaut to Foxfire.

Now, back to my homework.

Wayne's big picture is here:

    Sierra Crest from Rogers Peak

Most browsers bring it up scaled to show all within the window. Click on the image to get the full size.

Wayne, thanks for the good work!

that's great - I will try to redo the Deep Zoom with these names placed on the master images. That may cause issues at the image seams, because I have to do that before it gets exported. I could have provided a huge JPEG of the full pano to make the naming job easier. Wayne must have spent some serious time stitching this JPEG together from screen grabs.
