I found this video on YouTube. It was uploaded June 5. It looks like they turned around before Trail Camp.

I can't thank you enough for posting these videos. After watching the second one I decided to forgo my attempt to summit on 6/18. I have no desire to tackle 60 mph winds in 18 degrees. With out seeing it for myself I may have ended up in over my head.

Now just watch, ej... June 18 will be perfectly sunny, calm and clear, and the only problem will be for people not taking enough sun screen. wink

Makes me think not being able to make my June 5th/6th date a blessing in disguise. Thanks for posting the videos Steve!

What's the limit for you guys on wind when it comes to turning back/pressing forward? I think I'd be okay with 50-60 mph, although it depends on what direction it's blowing and overall visibility. Better have my goggles too.

I showed the 6/5 video to my hiking partners.
Our group of 3 is now 2. I actually have a few unclaimed spots if anyone is interested. We are scheduled for 6/26.
That video is causing people to rethink plans. We are still going and will simply turn back if things looks rough. Can't wait.

Hello Jeremy,
I'm also going on 6/26 with six other people. We are going in through Horseshoe Meadows to Whitney Portal.
Hoping to summit on 6/29

Can anyone guess how long that snow might linger? I wonder how much will remain by next month. I want to get up to Wotan's Throne in a day hike and I don't have any desire to bring crampons. Hmm.

Last year, the switchbacks were usable about July 1. That means the trail below was pretty much free of snow by then. I would expect the section you will be on to be fairly clear by early July.

Here's a not-so-current video: Taken in 1961, it shows an item of note, the rock wall around the summit toilet.

Neither one of us remembers taking a home movie camera with us, but we did. This recently discovered film footage was shot in May 1961 and the sound track is Jim and I goofing around on guitars in May 2011. It took 50 years to make this video! Enjoy.

This has got to be by far the best ride in California. Totally terrifying for the weak hearted, but a hell of ride for the wicked! Can't wait to go again. 2.5 hrs of climbing for 3 minutes of adrenaline. Who cares if I didn't summit!

Here's a video of a group of men and a 9-year-old boy. They planned on overnighting at Outpost, but felt so good, they pressed on. But the kid then developed AMS nausea before Trail Camp so they retreated to Outpost and made camp. After having dinner, the boy was sick again, so they broke camp and hiked down... making a day hike out of it!

It is a nice video to watch, with good music.

Here is a thirty minute video, "Midlife Madness" which documents two novice hikers taking on the Mountaineer's Route. There is music, adventure and humor.
