I'm still thinking about making the trip up to Whitney to use my permits for saturday 6/18. I'm planning on hiking to where it gets too difficult and isn't fun any more. Any know where or when that happens? I'm not bringing ice ax or crampons, so i don't tempt myself to push beyond my skill level. I'm just trying to get a feel for it, will i be hiking for 2 hours or 10 hours? I don't want to get started hiking at 6am if i could have started at 8am and had a more enjoyable time. No summit this trip, unless the switchbacks miraculously reveal themselves.

From the reports I have seen, snow starts soon after Lone Pine Lake, (where the wilderness boundary is), and is pretty solid beyond Bighorn Park (just a short distance above LPL.

If you aren't planning on a super long hike, I'd start at 8 a.m. rather than 6.
