At one time I thought I found a site that showed the number of days that walk in permits were not available. As I recall most nights they were. I have 3 permits for middle of September, but I need to move the trip forward a couple of days due to a conflict. Call the permit office and got a really vague discouraging answer. Does anyone have experience with getting an overnight walk in permit that time of the year?

Just search for "unused". Or use Google and try "Unused Whitney Permits". Here are the numbers for last year:

Unused Whitney Permits for 2010

Most people who walk in and try for permits get the permits they want. For early September, mid-week, and Monday/Tuesday entry dates are best. But, there are many no-shows even on weekends.

The unused numbers are what is left after everyone walking in throughout the day and asking has been given a permit. Your chances are better if you arrive at the 11 a.m. time when numbers are drawn from a hat, and whoever gets the lowest number gets first choice.

Read box 6 of the Wilderness Permit Options topic (link on the left) for more info.

Knock on wood, but I've never had a problem getting a walk in permit before. One of those times was a Labor Day weekend.

There are a couple of ways to play this game...

Same day start. Many times there are permits for the same day. Walk into the ESIVC and ask for one. If they have'm you are on your way to Outpost or Trail Camp.

2nd day start. Go in any time before they conduct the daily lottery and get a priority number. If there are more permits than people, you are good to go the following day. If there more people than permits and you are not chosen...I have a good Plan B...or go back the following morning and see if anyone no showed during the day.

Last year I got a walk-in overnight permit the day after labor day.

this year, beginning of August, I didn't get a walk-in permit. I may be the only person on the WZ board to actually not get permit. But I had a good backup plan. The Meysan Lake Trail starts over by the summer cabins in the portal area. You'll see very few people on the trail, have plenty of privacy wherever you camp and have beautiful scenery.

You can stop at Meysan Lake (kinda like hiking to Consultation lake) or continue on up Mt Mallory, Mt Irvine or Le Conte.
