I know this is a long shot, but if anyone has any day hike permits for Saturday, October 8th that they will not be using and will be calling the permit office to cancel them, I'd REEEAAALY appreciate if you could contact me to let me know when you'll be making that call... I could then call to reserve them.

Right now there are no permits available for that day; I'm debating on just going for it and hope for "walk-in permits", or maybe reserving some permits for Sunday as a "fall back" date, but Sunday doesn't work as well for family

Thanks!!!
Rosie

Rosie, look at the Unused Whitney Permits 2010 page.

The last Saturday in 2010 when all dayhike permits were used up was Sept 18. And those numbers are after the day ended, and all comers were given what was available. (I imagine people drop in on Saturday and ask for a dayhike permit just to hike up the trail a ways.)

If you show up for the dayhike permit lottery at 2 PM the day before, when they declare the no-shows and pull numbers from a hat, there will be an abundance of permits.

I wouldn't even worry about calling in to reserve permits for that late date. You have to pay $15 per slot for the reservations, but going in on Friday, they are free.

Thanks Steve!!!

I knew there was a chart like this somewhere; I've used it in the past but I couldn't find it.

I think you're right... I'm gonna just relax about it and go for the walk-in permits. grin Hard for me... I'm kinda one of those people that likes to have everything planned out!

I went back a few years on the "Unused Whitney Permits" chart, and the number of unused tickets for the month of October looks really promising. Now, if the weather will just co-operate....

Thanks again!

Steve, is there anything posted for the North Fork? Trying to decide if I should bother waking up early Saturday or driving late on Friday. Thanks.
