Erik Goetze has created some nice virtual reality panorama pictures on Mt Whitney. They were created over 10 years ago, but mountains don't change...

When you view any of these pictures, you can click and drag the mouse on the picture to make it pan left or right (and up or down), so the picture changes as if you are rotating and looking at the view. The fullScreen versions are even better!

You can also zoom in or out using the Shift and Ctrl keys.

There are more panoramas at http://www.virtualparks.org/ The Mono Tufa Formations is especially good.

AxeMan,

Wonderful pano! I don't have QuickTime at work, nor am I allowed to download it here either, unfortunately.

AxeMan, do you have any idea what it would require to convert your image into a QuickTime panorama like the Erik Goetze views?

His were taken long ago, and it appears your image quality is sooo much better.

going for some summit panos later this year. Last year it never made sense to go up there.

Hi Steve,
Yes, I had conversion software to make QuickTime panos a few years back, but it doesn't run on my OS now. I'll find an update or workaround, though.

In the meantime, here's one from the top of Muir.

you need a piece of software called Quicktime VR - when it was new in the 90s we paid $1300 for it. No idea if it is still that expensive

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/qtvr/

the link that sends you to authoring software goes nowhere, because nothing on that page can create these things. I would say the days of QTVR are over, now that you can do the same thing in free software and users don't need to install Quicktime to watch your panoramas if they are done in Flash or Silverlight.
