Just wondering what the groups thoughts are on hiking with an ear infection? Not a Whitney hike, over 450 feet lower to Langley. (that was an attempt at a joke since I'm so bummed right now)

Supposed to go Saturday, hopefully I can get in to see the doc in the morning. Not sure how quick they take you in the civilian world. If I was still on active duty I would be at the doc now.

Pretty sure I'll be sitting around hoping that mountain doesn't go anywhere............................DUG

If you have an appointment in the morning, you'll have an antibiotic right away. If no appointment (first time visits are sometimes scheduled a month down the road), tell them you have an ear infection -- that may raise the priority so you get in.

If you can't get to see a regular physician (or his/her nurse practitioner is just as good), go to a walk-in clinic. They're more expensive with long wait sometimes, but they see everyone that day.

It's a good idea to get the initial visit with the doctor of your choice done so next time you can call and they see you that day.

All that said... I hope you get an antibiotic tomorrow. Seems like within 24 hours the ear should be feeling ok. I'd go for the hike.

Thanks Steve, I hope you're right. When Mike has his ear infection last year the doc said no hiking at altitude for almost three weeks. Then again he's just a kid so hopefully they don't tell me the same thing.................DUG

DUG..... I don't think there's a doctor on earth who could tell you what you should or shouldn't do :-)

Good luck on the hike. Steve's right. If you can get in early and let the antibiotics get going. I know my sore throat a couple of weeks back started feeling better within hours of taking the antibiotics.

Hiking is not a mission; get well.

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Unless the antibiotic kills the bacterial infection and the swelling in your Eustachian tube goes down and opens, the altitude will show you real pain. The new antibiotics are strong and given for 5 days but the life cycle of bacteria is still 10 days. You may feel improvement before 10 days though. If when going up in altitude and your ear pain increases stop and go down ASAP. You could blow an ear drum if you ignore the pain signal. You don't want that, trust me. Can't force or ignore ear pain with a bad infection. Brown goopy shit coming out you ear. I'd wait.

Yikes! sick

I'd never heard of that bad an infection. Maybe Rod is right.

ENT on Monday. It's bad. Between this and some sort of failed pressure test I took during my last VA appointment the doc thinks there is a hole in there too. Bummer. Hope that mountain don't go anywhere.

If I was solo or with my old partner I would go anyway. Well, assuming my wife didn't go to the doc appointment with me (bad call there), but it's my son and a young friend of mine, so no sense doing something stupid with them there.........................................DUG

so you have a hole in your head? was that before or after you purchased the fixer upper? smile

Take care of yourself so when you get back on the trail it will be a enjoyable experience and not one of pain.

Rod is right...think those screaming kids on airplanes when you descend and the increasing air pressure blows their ears inward.

I can also tell you that just driving up and down the Sierras can be excruciating. It hurt so bad when I had a ear infection in the Sierras once, I took 4 or 5 kiddie antihistamine /decongestants and got so loopy I fell down the steps in Reno on the way home.
