About time! smile There were a few moment this year when I couldn't wait for the snow to melt. Now I want it to come back. November already and Whitney looks dry except for the chutes. This time last year, the mountain was covered in at least two feet of snow at the higher elevations.

Looks like a major cold event is on its way!

Checking the NOAA forecast for the Whitney summit, it shows a low of -2 °F Friday night. After a break Saturday, Sunday's high shows 9 °F.

Definitely winter conditions!

Dennis Mattinson's weather links and the NOAA links are on the Mt Whitney Weather page. (in the box on the left)

I was picking up pictures of Yosemite today on my twitter feed, funny huh, here I am heading home from work in the dark at 8pm (it actually gets very dark in the UK now at 5pm), in a wet and windy south coast UK, my work mates are talking work and beer on the commuter train, and I am (spiritually) in Yosemite Valley, Love to see it over new year, the photos look great

Tempting. It looks beautiful!

Last time, the one part that terrified me was the snow crossing on sub dome. I just don't have a lot of experience there. This winter, I'm taking one of Kurt's snow travel classes. I'll be up for it again next Spring for sure.

Brent is referring to Kurt Wedberg's Sierra Mountaineering International course:   Snow Travel

They run their course on the east side of the Sierra, somewhere close to Bishop.

another snow course option - Ned Tibbetts has done these for years, especially targeting PCT or early season JMT hikers:

http://www.mountaineducation.org/

I know many who have taken snow courses from Ned and highly recommend them. Dates are on the site.
