So I'm thinking about hiking the Sierra Trail from Crescent Meadow to Mt. Whitney this coming Summer and I'm trying to figure out an appropriate time to do it. I've been out there and seen the conditions in early July but what are the conditions like in mid-June. I know even if the area has a moderate snowfall that there will probably still be snow on the ground. My big concern is whether or not it would be safe to attempt some of the climbs through the saddles and river crossings.
Advice?
Thanks

Everything depends on the snow fall and if we have a warm spring or not. The first time I did the High Sierra Trail I started on June 15th. I had some problems with snow while climbing the Kaweah Gap and had to spend more then a mile off trail down 9 Lakes Basin but other then that no real issues at all. Of course that was 2008 and each year has had more snow and if this coming year is anything like 2011 then going mid June would be a tough trip.

Fact is that you can do these things at any time of the year but that takes it to a whole other level of gear needed and more importantly skill and experience.

Here are my photos which can give you an idea of what mid June "can" be like:

A family group started July 12 this summer, and bailed due to snow blocking the trail. They encountered a very steep icy slope to cross, not sure which location. Another pair had successfully crossed the spot a day before, though.

It all depends on how much snow we get this winter.

Sounds like the tunnel area above Hamilton Lake. I spent two hours digging my way through but many people might not do that.
