A letter from Yosemite National Park Superindendent Don L. Neubacher .

"A portion of the Lower Pines Campground and all of Upper and Lower River Campgrounds sustained extensive damage and were closed immediately following the 1997 flood. As the river overtopped its banks and spread across the flood plain, some areas of Yosemite Valley were temporarily submerged to a depth of five to eight feet. A heavy layer of sand and silt was deposited as the slower-moving flood waters gradually receded."

Visitor Quotas for Yosemite Valley Coming Soon...

http://www.mercedsunstar.com/2011/11/29/2139230/plan-could-restrict-yosemite-use.html

Plan #1 was overturned and then Plan #2 was stopped while under construction. We're now on Plan #3 and $50 million into this with a new EIS in process. The Wild and Scenic River designation is driving the entire management plan for everything within 1/4 mile of the river in Yosemite Valley, Little Yosemite Valley, and the Merced High Sierra Camp including the backpackers camps, so get involved now if you have an opinion. They've got a slick summary of the issues and an easy way to comment online. You must comment by Dec 14.

Whoa! They don't make it easy. The document to comment on is 30 pages, with lots of checkboxes and places to comment.

Here is the page with a link to the document and a link to the comments submission page.
Alternatives Development Planning Workbook

I personally do not agree with the agenda of the group hammering Yosemite N.P. in the courts. But I can't come up with an idea that would stop the madness. ...maybe remove the Wild and Scenic designation from the river?
