On Memorial weekend my wife and I are planning a quick trip to Sierras. Unfortunatley we don't have a long holiday weekend, so I thought the drive to Kennedy Meadows/south Sierra Wilderness would be a good trip. Mellow car camping with some day hikes.

Any advice for camping locations? I've always wanted to visit Kennedy Meadows, but have also noticed other campgrounds (Troy, Fish creek, Jackass). Has anybody used those areas? I found several trails that start at Blackrock TH. What are usually snow conditions that time of year?

Consider an easy backpack to Jordan Springs from Blackrock. Great dayhike, too.

Take swimmers (or not) as the hot springs are a treat. Also visit the old resort ruins - quite an interesting story there.

If you do go there, I would appreciate it if you post some photos, as I have wonderful memories but no images of that great place.

Note on Jordan Hot Springs: the section of the trail from Jordan to Casa Vieja meadowns involves a 2,000 foot or so gain,
that many find challenging, particularly with a heavy pack.

Blackrock seems hardly used, other than by people staging for their trip the next day. Never seen more than a couple of people there. about 30 min past KM.

The others that you mention are heavily used by the ATV crowd, and seem to be noisy and dusty, and I avoid them.

Kennedy itself is not used by the ATV group, and is generally nice. The Wildrose Trail is used by almost nobody.

There will be heavy usage of the area, in general, that weekend.

I suppose any campground will be packed that weekend. Does the forest service operate Kennedy Meadows?

They do, and it probably will be, but there is also dispersed camping available along the river to the south of the campground.

Also, there are two "overflow" campgrounds to the west. I know that one is associated with Fish Creek, and another with Troy Meadows.
