They have lots of experience with AMS and HAPE hospitalizations at "only" 10,000 ft.
Look how long they recommend for proper, full acclimatization for Whitney-like heights. Harvey

Indian Armed Forces Acclimatization Schedule

Adapted from Deshwal article in Wilderness & Environmental Medicine, 23, 7-10 (2012)

Days 1-2: rest except short walks about barracks, no climbing.
Days 3-4: walk slowly for 1.5-3km (1-2 miles), avoid steep climbs
Days 5-6: walk up to 5 km (3 miles) and climb slowly up to 300m (1,000ft )

Second stage: 4 days, 3,600-4,500m (11,800 - 14,700ft)

Days 1-2: walk slowly for 1.5-3km (1-2 miles), avoid steep climbs
Days 3 : walk slowly and climb up to 300m (1,000ft)
Days 4 : climb 300m (1,000ft ) with equipment

Third stage: 4 days, > 4,500m (14,700ft )

Days 1-2: walk slowly for 1.5-3km (1-2 miles), avoid steep climbs

That's good to see, Harvey. It goes to show that we weekend warriors never become that well acclimated. I know it takes me at least three days hiking in the Sierra around 10,000 ft, before my appetite kicks back in.

The resting at altitude is counter to what backpackers can do -- for myself, I've got ten to fifteen miles to cover each day. NO REST! Which probably contributes greatly to the inability to eat much. frown

WTF??? Seriously...just crazy. The guy did Everest over 10 times, lives at high altitude, and dies at base camp from AMS.

AMS/HAPE/HACE can and does affect everyone from newbies to super-veterans.

For example, Edmund Hillary, after Everest, later developed HAPE on Makalu

The subject of HAPE/HACE, I'm finding is murky at best in terms of predicting what one's chances really are. We try to acclimate ourselves thoughtfully, stay in shape, even take medications like Diamox (some even propose dexamethasone prophylaxis, or Sildenafil) and yet examples of the Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary, individuals who are WAY better acclimated and experienced at altitude than I'll ever be, "mysteriously" come down with HAPE/HACE. Many proposed causes such as genetics, acclimatization schedules, hydration, physical condition, don't seem to provide any answers. Very puzzling to me.

I'm thinking that Sherpa who died of altitude might have gone up past base camp to set ropes or establish a higher camp and then came back down to base camp. Just speculating...

Another Sherpa died recently after falling off a ladder-bridge over a 46m crevasse.
