Hello!

My wife and I are planning a little Memorial day trip to the cottonwood lake area. I was wondering if anyone had any information about the road to Horseshoe meadow and when it usually opens.

Also, if what is the snow level around that area? We may climb New Army Pass up to Langley if possible.

Thanks!

Cody

My wife and I hiked that a couple years ago in July. All of the snow was melted except at New Army Pass. There was a large cornice that formed hanging over the trail, which is very common at that location. Most hikers continued, but a few turned back.

I think you should be looking pretty good this year due to the low snow. Keep an eye on reports but chances are New Army Pass will be clear of snow by then.

Most years you would either need an ice axe or take a rock scramble around the snow at that time of year.

Here is a shot of New Army Pass on Memorial weekend of 2009 which was a decent year for snow.

I'd expect the Horseshoe Meadows road will be open any time now. At least by the end of the month.

A great camping location is Chicken Spring Lake. Cottonwood Pass is usually an easy cross, even in big snow years.

This will give you access to both Cirque Peak and Mt. Langley for sure.
