Jay posted in the Shout Box (below the webcam and Feature Topics box):

> Hi I'm looking for 1 permit for Tue June 26th if anyone has any cancellations please let me know! Thanks
Just a day use!

Jay, people can't transfer their permits, but you could join someone's group. But that usually doesn't happen due to the difficulty of getting together, hiking together, etc. If someone does reply here or contact you, then that would work.

However, getting a walk-in permit for a Tuesday day hike is pretty easy. Check the Unused Whitney Permits numbers for previous years, and you can see mid-week there are nearly always permits available. The are made available at 11am at the Visitor Center (just S of Lone Pine) the day before your hike. For more details, check the Wilderness Permit Options (link to the left), especially Steps 5 and 6.

You can also keep checking the Recreation.gov site for Day Use Mt Whitney permits. There will likely be some cancellations coming available in the two weeks prior to your hike.

Good luck!

I'm not entirely sure what our complete plan is yet, but we may be coming down on that Tuesday after a Monday summit. It doesn't really help you in looking for a permit, but we might just see you on the trail!

We need to get a freak flag going again this year.

Hope you don't mind Jay, I am posting your PM:

Hey Steve I know you sent me the "unused" permit info in a recent post and wanted to clarify, one of the guys I'm planning on going with doesn't think that walk up permits are still a practice? The plan is to go up on Monday 25th camp at 8k feet and then head up Tuesday early.

Would I be able to go to the lone pine office and pick up the day use permit on Monday for Tuesday hike? Could I call and reserve or first come first serve?

Thanks!

Your friend got that info from the National Forest web site statement that goes something like this: No slots are held back for walk-in permits, all are reservable in the lottery.

However: There are ALWAYS no-shows and cancellations. And THOSE are always available for walk-ins. The Unused Permits page shows how many no-shows and cancellations are left AFTER all walk-in requests have been satisfied.

If there are more people looking for those cancellations and no-shows than are available, they hold a mini lottery -- drawing numbers out of a bucket. Lowest number gets processed first, so gets first shot, and so on. That process starts at 11 AM.

So be there Monday at 11 for the Tuesday Day Hike.

I just checked recreation.gov for a friend (to make them a URL to use Steve's quick check trick), and I noticed that there are currently 7 dayhike permits for June 26 available.
