5-24-2012 Today was the longest approach to the Summit of Whitney yet. We left Horseshoe meadows at 2:00 AM Headed up to cotton wood lakes , up over new army pass , then to the summit of mount Langley, descended back down to the trail towards rock creek, then to Crab tree, from there we went up the back side of Whitney to trails crest, then the Summit of Whitney. We made ascent in 15 hrs flat to the summit, then down to the portal total time 19 hrs 5 min. Total mileage 46 miles, Great weather amazingly beautiful day , this was are 10th time on Whitneys Summit since jan 1st 2012 and most of them within the last 8 weeks. smile

Reminds me of the "50 mile hike" that President John Kennedy promoted back in the 60's. Only I think he was talking about doing it on the flat!

Please do post more hike reports!

Your route to the summit sounds like a new route that I would like to consider when I get a chance to do some more hiking. I seem to have always been a creature of habit...always taking the same route or trail wherever I go. I always hike the main trail when I want to summit Mt. Whitney...I should add some excitement to my hiking by finding new routes with new scenery to see like you did. Of course I would always stay on maintained trails and carry a topology map with me.

Good job on your excellent time to finish your creative route to the summit of MT. WHITNEY : )

I highly recommend the tour from Horshoe Meadow up Langley , and over to Whitney .. All the tour is on maintained trails. The scenery down by rock creek and into lower crab tree is stunning with open meadows, lots of wildlife , and lots of water , certainly a trip to put on the calendar

Holy smokes, that is flat out movin'! New Army, Langley and Whitney in 15 hours is almost super-human - especially in winterish conditions. You say "we" - how many of you were there? And have you calculated the cumulative elevation gain of this hike? That may be the most impressive number of all.

You and your partner(s) deserve a big tip of the cap, MW - averaging better than 2 mph over that distance, at that elevation, with that gain, doesn't happen every day.

When I say "we" it is me and my partner Tracy...she and I make a great team!
I believe the elevation gain was roughly 11,000'. We spend all of our free time running and climbing in the sierra mountains. Our next peak will be - hopefully - Williamson/Tindall double via Shepard Pass! And then in two weekends we will be doing the Evolution loop leaving from Bishop pass and ending up at Paiute Pass in 56 miles. Our last and best time last summer was 19 hrs, which we are hoping to cut off 1 full hour.
