I have a reservation for June 12-13 at Whitney Portal and reservations for a day permit on the 13. We needed to cancel short notice so if someone else is interested, let me know and we can work out the details.

Well, no, you cannot "work out the details." Sorry.

There is no way to transfer a hiking permit reservation, since the person who entered the lottery and registered as the trip leader, or any named alternate leader, is the ONLY person who can pick up the actual permit. (They ask for an ID.)

All you can do, and it is kind if you do it right away, is to log onto the recreation.gov site, and cancel your permit. They will then release that permit back to the system where it can be re-reserved by someone else.

And they hold the release time for up to 24 hours, so that you can't release it and have someone else grab it right away. Sorry it has to be this way, but after seeing the havoc caused by the hackers who gobbled up all the Half Dome permits last year, then scalped them on Craigslist, this is a far better method.

If you don't release your permit and you don't go in to pick it up by noon the day before, then it is declared a no-show, and becomes available to anyone walking in and requesting it.

Bugger, I was afraid that was going to be the answer. I can understand that they don't want people scalping them and creating artificial demand, but it stinks that they get to double charge for my misfortune. We'll consider it a donation I guess. *sigh* guess I'll toss them back and hope someone else can use it.

Yes, I agree that the $6.00 charge to enter the lottery, and then the $15 per hiker charge that is not refunded is pretty steep in this day when everything runs on computers.

I'd sure like to see at least a partial refund if a permit is cancelled early enough.

On the other hand, if a full refund were offered, then lots of people would enter the lottery a dozen times, then cancel most of their slots, keeping only the best one. This happens in the river-run lotteries that recreation.gov runs on the "Four Rivers Lottery" / Salmon River, where there is about a 20% success rate.
