some (late) info on this one- already figured out by Salty, and also in Alan's summary page.

I underlined some of the clues: The balloons flown included both the the Intrepid and the Constitution, flown at the Battles of Gaines Mill and/or Fair Oaks, part of the more familiarly known First Battle of Cold Harbor by those in union suits. All of this part of the Peninsula Campaign east of Richmond, Va during the War between the States.

or it could be at Gaines Mill

And don't forget Thadeus Lowe!

AlanK took more than 3 days to solve this. That's some kind of a record.

Well, he'd rank that as a tough one.

There is also one coming up. The pictured building opened on October 28, 1972.

Of course you had me thinking "next time I say l say 'let's go to Bolivia', let's go to Bolivia." But, as far as I can tell, it's not the right place.

Wouldn't want to hurry things too much here, but giving any additional clues would end this puzzle.

That's enough for me. I should have realized that the guys referred to in the original post were not the ones chasing Redford and Newman.

The obscurely-named Clinton Rock is in the area.

Steve and Wagga have the place, but the specific answer(s) to the question may be more elusive. You may have to drill down more than a little bit.

I take it that just naming the four dead white males is not what you're after.

Correctamundo. Present tense requires a frame of reference.

I think that we are looking for six, not four. And probably not so white.
