I just indulged my Vintage Kelty demon, again, and bought this pack:

It was listed as a D-4, but I believe may actually be an early 70's Tioga (1973 was the first date of issue.) But the really interesting part is the patches:

The frame bears the name "E V McCollum" and a DL #. Any ideas on how to trace the original owner would be welcome.
BTW, the pack is in new if not mint condition, and yes I would sell it, but not cheap. I can claim many, but not all, of the patches: JMT and PCT are still bucket list, but the rest, I can proudly own. Maybe you can claim them all.

Nice looking pack!
But.... if it is in mint condition, I wonder how much actual use it has seen on those trails.
As for the DL #, not sure, but in CA, with a car's license number, in the past one could go into a CA DMV office, fill out a form, and they would mail the text of your form to the owner of the car. Not sure on the DL #, though. Do you have a friend in a police dept?

The pack looks like it has seen no use on any trail, but that doesn't mean the owner didn't. And the new owner certainly has, except for PCT.

Elmer Verner McCollum was a pioneering chemist/nutritionist who discovered Vitamin A, Vitamin B and Vitamin D.
As he passed away in 1967, probably not his Kelty.

There was also a well-regarded geophysicist, a little more of the era, about whom I have inquired. He would have been in his 70s at the time the pack was made, also possible but not likely.

Those patches are awesome. I had a hard time finding patches for the mountains I've climbed/hiked, so I just started carrying a green flag in each of my packs. When I hit the summit, I sign the flag with the name of the mountain and whoever is with me.
Probably not as cool, but it works for me.
Nice pack!
