I have a backpacking trip planned for the Sabrina Lake basin next weekend. Unfortunately I did not reserve a permit for the trail on friday. How early should I get to the ranger station to get one of the walk up permits?? I'll try to pick them up in Lone Pine because that will be the closest ranger station to me. I think there are 10 walk up permits.
thanks.

Walk in at the open in Lone Pine and there should not be a problem. I've only gone to a Plan B once and I always walk-in any more...this includes the MMWT.

Thank you for the information. Do they have seperate lines for Whitney permits and permits for other trails? I've always reserved my permits ahead of time. If they don't have any when they open, maybe some no-show/cancellation permits will become available by the time I get to Bishop. I think people have until 11 am to pick up permits for the day of the hike.

40% of trail quota numbers are held back (except for Whitney permits) for walk-in requests. Those walk-ins become available at 11 AM the day BEFORE the hike date.

Of the 60% that have been reserved in advance, those must be picked up by 11 (or maybe 10 AM) the day OF the hike. If the reserved ones are not picked up, they become available at 11 AM the same day.

If you go to the Visitor Center at 11 AM in Lone Pine, you will be put into the lottery, where everyone there pulls numbers, and they get to step up to a clerk for processing in the order of numbers drawn.

By 11 am I'll be in Bishop to pick up my Sabrina Lake permit. I'll see what happens, maybe hang out in Bishop on friday or a short day hike before the Sabrina trip.
