I have read some great information on this forum about how and where to find water for a one day summit hike (Bob Rockwell for one).

My question is a bit more specific about a summit hike in the first week of October. I "get" that nobody can predict the weather but, can anyone recommend 2-3 can't miss spots to get water, I don't want to be wondering if a stream is frozen or not?

I guess I am asking where would YOU plan on stopping if you wanted to fill up your hydration pack two, maybe three times?

* This will be first attempt for a few middle aged guys, we are training for this hike and will be reasonably fit but I still don't want to carry more water than needed. I am all about simple and most reliable.

Thanks in advance!

That late, you can't depend on any water on the switchbacks above Trail Camp. Last water will be the Trail Camp pond. (I never treat the water at the inlet.)

Stella, am not entirely sure of your question.

Above Trail Camp, as Steve says, there is not likely to be any water source.

At Trail Camp and below, none of the water sources dry up, nor are likely to be frozen over in Oct.

To a large degree, it will be like a hike in June, except for above TC.

I've been on the Switchbacks a couple, three times in mid-September in a dry year and the source on the lower Switchbacks was bone dry.

It's best to load up at either Trailside Meadow or Trail Camp...wherever you take your last break before the switchers.
