We were planning on doing White Mtn early Saturday, but when I checked the forecast this morning, there was a 20% chance of thunderstorms/rain/snow for Friday and Saturday. It has since cleared up some, but since then I was able to grab a couple of day permits Mt. Whitney.

The friend that was going with me wanted to give White Mtn a shot, but isn't so sure about Whitney. Right now I am thinking we might plan on hiking to trail crest then reassessing how he's feeling or maybe hike MR to Iceberg Lake and turn around there.

Can someone tell me how far Iceberg Lake is from Whitney Portal? Anyone have any pictures they can share of the trail?

Thanks!

If weather is not looking good, the White Mountains are a better bet for better weather than Mt Whitney.

The route to Iceberg is not a "trail." However, if you know the route, the Ebersbacher Ledges are the toughest part. It is less than 3 miles in a direct line from Whitney Portal. If you're turning around at Iceberg, the hike may be quicker than White Mountain due to the shorter distance (twice the elevation, half the distance.)

Thanks Steve.

These are the forecasts I am looking at:

As of right now, it say mostly clear/sunny for whitney on Fri and Saturday. Rain Fri and Fri night for White Mtn and wind gusts up to 30 mph Saturday.

We ended up hiking MWMT yesterday and were lucky enough to summit. It was such a long, weird day (still trying to digest all that happened), but I saw one of the most amazing sunrises and sunsets I've ever seen. Just being able to experience that sunset made our miserable 5 hr hike out from trail camp (a good portion in the dark) worth it
