Is this something the camera does when the light hits a certain level, or was this for real today?

WPS camera showed a similar view, but out of focus in their gallery version. Would love to have the shots 20 or 30 minutes bracketing this one to see how it progressed in time lapse.

BTW: the shot from yesterday morning posted at the webcam URL is pretty spectacular, too. If you squint at it just right, it looks like either a moon jelly swimming over MW or the ghost of Mt Washington looming behind it

I think, when the light is especially dim, the web cam cameras take a long exposure, and somehow the blue light is all that gets recorded. It is likely just the difference between human eyes and the camera chip.

To see all pictures from the past two days:

Whitney web cam

Williamson web cam

On the Willamson pictures, see the headlight or tail light streaks on the early or late pictures to get an idea how much longer the shutter was open.

WPS cam is out of focus sometimes because they have it set on automatic focus, and in low light, that camera model has a hard time. WZ cam is on manual focus, which works ok until you zoom in too much.

Sure wish I could find someone interested in building a robot-control to manage a currently available point-and-shoot camera. The quality these days is so much better than the Olympus SP 500.

I think that was in the morning, but in any event I am sure it was Mt Washington (New Hampshire) in a sign from above as to what the No. 1 US day hike you must do is.

Definitely blue light when I was walking out of the grocery store tonight and looking west. But much paler than the photo.

Once direct sunlight is no longer hitting the atmosphere (or before it starts), the twilight can be very very blue. As an example, here's a morning shot in nearby Saline Valley when the orange morning sunrise light had not yet hit the sky:

And you can see the last bit of the blue light being chased away by the rising sun here:

The same thing happens in reverse at sunset, so if you take a pic at the right time the sky can appear very, very blue.
