Full story at the Sydney Morning Herald.

"We believed the 29-year-old placed himself and the search teams at risk through his lack of planning and preparation, and through carrying inadequate provisions," NSW Police Force Rescue commander Brenton Charlton said.

"The man had with him a kilo of potatoes and naan bread."

Note that he could have borrowed a PLB for free in this area, according to the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Squad.

Good for the Aussie's for not putting up with unprepared trekkers.

Does anyone know if the USA takes this No Nonsense ...Zero Tolerance approach to trekkers?

Mostly not. It's actually difficult to prove and most county/federal SAR people don't want to discourage people calling for help when they first think they're in trouble. Delay can increase risk to both the injured/sick and responders.

Also, in my experience, most people genuinely need help. Some exceptions but fewer than the press would make people believe.

George

PS. And it's not just the press. There's nothing more fun than for responders to tell rescued bozo stories -- so they're disproportionately represented around the campfire.

None of the views expressed here in any way represent those of the unidentified agency that I work for or, often, reality. It's just me, fired up by coffee and powerful prose.

I would expand on this even further to say that publicity-shy, anti-social recluses such as my good self are over-prepared, because we blanche at the thought of being the next "headline rescue" story -- complete with 8x10 glossy digital photos with all the circles & arrows -- for the various message boards to feed on over the next year(I am wondering if the Three Stooges have lived down their helicopter ride from the hut yet?)

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Australia seems to be much like the USA in that hikers should get a permit and check in with a ranger. I was taught...when I was a teen...to get a permit for the trail I was hiking and when I finished my hike to turn in my permit at the ranger's office or drop box when done hiking. San Gorgonio still has this system and so does the ranger station at the top of the Palm Springs tramway.

This guy should haven the free beacon with him. I'm sure there were signs about fee beacons near the trailheads.

I first read this as suggesting that people should have free bacon with them, and that signs about free bacon might have been near the trailhead. I was ready to buy a ticket for down under. Bacon on the brain.
