Didn't get much done last year hiking wise. Just a 6 day mountaineering course on Mt. Baker which was fantastic. This year, Shasta at least, or maybe Rainier. And hopefully a Whitney visit with the Bulldog family. This Feb/March a Death Valley visit with Bulldog. After a long bout of being a sloth, I'm easing back into the training routine. Found this inspiring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX9FSZJu448So, what are your plans? John

I have no idea yet outside Alaska. There is just so much new here to do that I haven't even touched yet. I actually hope to run a "Wilderness Marathon". That is a race of the Crow Pass Hike I posted in the day trip thread. The requirement is to reach the top of the pass in 1 hour and complete the entire 22 mile or so race in 6 hours.
Already training for that and am finding my tolerance for cold weather running is much better than I ever imagined. Putting in several miles in 30 degree weather with only shorts and thin long sleeve shirt. Colder runs I will add a layer.

I'm hoping to get my family to Glacier N.P. and Yellowstone this summer. Someone nominated a hike in Glacier I want to do when I am there. Oh, and hoping for a side trip to the Sierra too.

The video was very inspiring, thanks for sharing.
We are camping in Death Valley Easter weekend, it will be our first time there.
We had planned to visit Yellowstone this summer, but that had to be put off this year so we have a couple of reservations at the portal in May and June. My son loves the campground; he doesn't want to camp anywhere else and has agreed to hike ALL the way to Lone Pine Lake this year...I'll believe it when I see it.
We are also planning on hiking up the mountain again this year, probably in August. We are trying to figure out the schedule with work, school, someone to take care of the kid. I am happy with the changes made to the lottery, with the opportunity to confirm/decline trip dates offered. I did get two sets of permits last year and returned the one we were not going to use and just considered it a donation to the Inyo Forest.
Since Yellowstone was cancelled, I am hoping we can go to Zion (also first time) in the fall.

With three young kids, and a wife who's becoming more interested in hitting the trail with me, it's hard to set up many big trips. The wife and I are hoping to hit the HST this summer, and I'm planning to get her to the Whitney summit for her first time on that trip. We'll also do plenty of day hikes with the kids. My oldest (3 yrs old) has been talking since the weather turned about all the great hikes we did this past summer. She got out of the carrier and onto her feet this past summer for some hikes of her own, and she's excited to do more. Daddy's back appreciates it, too!

I wasn't sure what I was going to do this year. I thought I might not do another long hike but I just had to say why not?
I'm going to try and leave on June 1st again this year and probably shoot for another 140 day hike like last year. I just have to try and not get injured this time around. Every year I have gone out for more days then the year before so I have to at least beat 111 days.

Good luck, Chris! If you DO hike the HST, the Crescent Meadow trailhead is definitely a kid-friendly place. If the kids grandparents or capable people are with you, you all could hike out the trail less than a mile to "Eagle View", and the kids could see all the way to Kaweah Gap where you will be heading. Here's the map (link)

Thanks for the suggestion, Steve; we just might do that!
I'll be checking in over the summer prior to the trip if we decide to make it happen.

I was planning on doing the JMT this year, but I can see that it isn't going to happen. Shooting for OV to MtW instead.
Planning on doing something this winter if my schedule lightens up.
I've been taking my son's wrestling team on 5.5mile weekly conditioning hikes up in the Santa Monica mountains behind our house. Plan on continuing that through the end of February.
Hoping to do some winter/early spring hikes on the MMWT. Going to start small. Maybe an overnight to LPL and then work my way up. If I make it up to trail crest by the end of the snow season, I will be happy.
Planning on Tuttle Creek or Meysan Lake during the height of the season.
Not even going to bother trying to get a whitney permit this year. I'll go up, see if I can get a walk-in, if not, I'll explore other trails.

My group has reservations for a return trip just after Memorial Day to Yosemite. The recent dump of snow on the Sierras may limit our options come May/early June. And we are considering a trip to the Ruby Mountains or possibly back to Zion just after Labor Day. I guess we try to avoid the crowds. We are interested in The Narrows. One member of our group was unsuccessful in the Whitney permit lottery last year.

Two trips for me. First with my daughter to hike up to Dana Peak and Mt. Langley (two separate hikes). This is set for August.
Secont trip in Sept. with "yet to be determined guide" to do Cathedreal Peak and Whitney - either East Face, or East Buttress. I will probably also try Russell one or two days later.

Immediate plans include X-C skiing and snow-shoeing; plenty of snow in the Sierras. Hiking in the Burrens of southwest coast of Ireland late May. 100 miler on the JMT, southern section - going in over Bishop Pass and coming out at Whitney. And hopefully, the Ruby Mountains of eastern Nevada. Etc, etc.

Ruby mountains! I did not think that anyone else went near there. I have a friend that lives in Wells, Nv., and travels through and around the "Rubies" every day. I would appreciate any recreational information on this little range, Bob (He does not hike, but I do)

Excellent information -- thank you, Bob. I had no idea that the Rubies were a "destination" all to themselves, as they have been an ever-present backdrop to hundreds of pictures sent to me. I do know, however, that Lamoille Canyon (not to far away) is stunning in the Autumn.

Luck! Scored my first TH and date choice on first try in the Yosemite lottery. Happy Isles on Aug 5, Whitney Portal exit (on the 26th, nominally). I heard there's a trail that goes that way . . .

Congratulations, saltydog! I am sure you will enjoy that trail. Be prepared, in some summers August can be rainy. My plans: Grand Canyon R-2-R day hike about May 16. Thanks to Julius S for making the transportation possible. Later in the summer, I want to do the hike posted by raphus: Swiftcurrent pass in Glacier National Park. Our family is planning to visit GNP, so one of the days, I am doing that hike! I've created a Google map showing the route. Gmap4 map: Swiftcurrent PassI'm itching to get to Kern Hot Springs on the HST, since I missed it with my Pants Pass hike last summer. But it may have to wait another year.

plans - always have plans
April - Telescope Peak, Whitney Mountaineer's Route, White Mountain West Ridge, Ski Mammoth, Ski Tour around Tuolumne Meadows, maybe go with a guided tour into the Ionian to wrap it up
August - either another Muir Trail jo-jo attempt, or hike my very own Sierra High Route, (a combination of SHR, MTR and off trail routes I always wanted to explore to go from Tuolumne Meadows to Whitney).

Congratulations, saltydog! I am sure you will enjoy that trail. Be prepared, in some summers August can be rainy. Don't I know it . My first MWMT trip, in August of 1964, blown out by storm system: only at TC (and down to about 9500 feet) it was 6 inches of snow for about 5 days straight. We were headed for Lake South America and Kern Canyon: I still haven't made it there. As you know, backed off of Kaweah Gap by snow 2 years ago. Well, third try in 49 years, and I WILL be prepared. Changing out some gear as well as adding food at MTR. Adding a fleece layer and maybe tech cloth shell, maybe a gas stove, to the bucket there, for the high country to the south.
Wherever you go, there you are. SPOTMe!

RoguePhonic's plans deserve a thread of their own. I can't wait to see the pictures. There must be a book, there.
Due to an awful lot of late night and early morning faxing, I now have permits this summer for three far shorter, classic trips:
(1) Desolation Wilderness (2) Lyell Canyon to Mammoth (JMT) (3) High Sierra Trail leaving from Crescent Meadows. Currently, the plan is to do a lollipop loop rather than the whole traverse, though that may change.
Advice appreciated re (3): I'd love to do the whole HST but the logistics of Whitney Portal back to Crescent Meadow make my head hurt. This has been the subject of prior threads -- paid shuttles, two-personal-car-shuttles, key swaps. If folks have suggestions beyond the obvious, please let me know. Were we to do the whole traverse, I would want to avoid the logistics of having two groups coordinate a key swap from different directions...gotta keep it simple!
Thanks!

Whitney Portal back to Crescent Meadow make my head hurt. You just need to ask a big favor of a friend and have them drive with you to Whitney to leave a vehicle and then they drive you to Lodgepole and drop you off. Other wise try to make the time to loop the whole thing.

Hey, want to be my friend? Though you'll be deep in the Sierra, I suspect, on the trip of a lifetime.

We'll probably just do some sort of loop.
But I did figure out that, from the Bay Area, it is entirely possible to do the thru hike, Sequoia/Lodgepole to Whitney Portal, using no cars, and instead a combination of Greyhound, ESTA, and a Visalia-Sequoia NP shuttle (and, of course, hitchhiking from the Portal to Lone Pine). It is not nearly as time consuming as one would think (the worst part is the ESTA/Greyhound bus trip from Lone Pine-Reno-Oakland, which is about 12 hours).

Look at bus connections back to CM right from Lone Pine: to Yosemite is easy, CREST to Yarts, then Greyhound or AMTrak (yes a lot of AmTrak routes include buses) to Visalia, then SEKI shuttle. Requires a very early am start in Lone Pine (CREST stop is a block or two from the Hostel) and possibly an overnight in Yosemite (Camp IV or backpackers CG with a next day permit). I would look into whether you can get all the way to Visalia Holiday Inn in one day, then catch the SEKI shuttle in the morning.
Great lollipop route would be return from Whitney by Pants Pass or Pyra_Queen Col. In fact from Whitney summit, that would probably be as fast as by bus from Lone Pine! See Steve C's HST report from last year, and keep in mind that both Pants and PQ are easier E to W.
BTW, at Whitney summit, you HAVE done the whole HST. Like the JMT, Whitney is the terminus, not the Portal.
Wherever you go, there you are. SPOTMe!

Now that's a hike, RP. Looks like adequate time to acclimate to the elevation.

It is not nearly as time consuming as one would think (the worst part is the ESTA/Greyhound bus trip from Lone Pine-Reno-Oakland, which is about 12 hours). One other option might be to hook up with a Whitney hiker that is finishing their hike on the same day that you hike out to the portal. Provided that hiker had room, and was going to Fresno, Visalia, or the Bay Area they could easily drop you off at you car (well a bit out of the way, but not much, and something a fellow hiker might be willing to do). Even if this strategy fell apart you would still have the option Steve pointed out.

Much better: CREST to Mojave ($16), then AMTrak from Mojave to Visalia ($30)
Wherever you go, there you are. SPOTMe!

These suggestions are great! Gonna check out the Mojave one now. Gotta say the idea of a grand loop is growing on me now....

Too busy to do much and go far for long this year. I'm concentrating on getting into better health for next year. 1) Dayhiking the 9 peak traverse in the San Bernardino range is something I've wanted to do for awhile now. 2) North Ridge of Lone Pine Peak. 3) Maybe Clyde Minaret or Banner/Ritter. 4) Maybe Tyndall/Williamson. 5) Maybe Cirque Peak>Langley>Muir>Whitney>Russell combo.

I'm trying to do a trip every other weekend until my August Whitney trip. So far I have Mt. Baldy, Mt. San Jacinto, Mt. San Gorgonio, North Fork to the Pallisades, Desolation Lake, White Mtn. After Whitney I don't know what I'll do, maybe the Lost Coast Trail.
