i am trying to plan for some mid-september hikes in eastern yosemite.

i need to have a hotel base camp. i know, that's an oxymoron.

tioga pass resort seems sketchy.

am thinking june lake or lee vining.

does anyone have any experience in this regard? mid-to-upper end ok.

thanks,
bsmith

Much more variety of accomodation and cafes in June Lake, and quieter than Lee Vining.

Nothing sketchy about the Tioga Pass Resort. I've stayed there many times. Hard to get reservations though.

Yes, Tioga Pass Resort is okay, if you can get reservations. Their online reservation system doesn't seem to be working just now, so try telephoning.

The little cafe can be very crowded, especially on weekends, but the food is good - particularly breakfast. You would be very close to Yosemite hiking, without the somewhat long drive up and down Tioga Pass road from June or Lee Vining.

An alternative for food is the Tuolumne Meadows store, but also crowded at times.

Why not try camping at Tuolumne Meadows campground? There are also F.S. campgrounds in Lee Vining canyon.

Lee Vining...if you can stand the semis rolling down the 395, but the area is an ideal basecamp.

Everyone goes to June Lake...

Journey well...

I like the June Lake Loop. It's quite and has all the conveniences plus the Tiger Bar. ;-) If you want to save some bucks utilize the June Lake Campground. It is in walking distance to town and there are pay showers in the vicinity.

We used to go to Reverse Creek Lodge every October for many years, if you are looking for a recommendation for a place to stay.

To my knowledge, the best way to get reservations at TPR is by emailing them. You let them know the dates you want and how many people you are, and they tell you what is available. To me, it is a special place.
