This report from the Brisbane Times is interesting. 135,000 acres is over 210 square miles, about 1/6 the area of Yosemite NP.

An English teenager missing in Queensland's outback after setting out for a run while jackarooing could survive in the desert for anywhere between a few hours and a few weeks.

Sam Woodhouse, 18, has spent at least two nights exposed to the elements on a 135,000 acre property at risk of dehydration, snake bites and injury.

Found today after 4 days out.

"Conditions where he was missing were so harsh two State Emergency Service volunteers were taken to Longreach Hospital during the search with heatstroke."

I'm wondering why they called him a "backpacker". Is that something they call a person who travels (hitch hikes, etc) with a backpack? The article says, " Mr Woodhead was reported missing from Upshot Station on Wednesday morning.

He had been working there as a jackaroo for about 10 days, as part of his gap year."

Had to look up jackaroo:

"A jackaroo is a young man (feminine equivalent jillaroo) working on a sheep or cattle station, to gain practical experience"

Also, "It is believed Mr Woodhead had set off for a run when he went missing."

Kind of tough to gain experience if you go out on your own and get lost.
