Our group obtained permits through Inyo and could not obtain the exit date we wanted. The only exit date available was 4 or 5 days after we hoped to summit Whitney and finish our back country time (leaving through the Whitney portal). Is there any sort of enforcement of the exit date? I understand the goal of controlling the number of people passing through on any given day but, since ours is a short trip (3-days) and we can only reserve 6 months out, it is difficult to imagine ever beating out Trekkers with longer itineraries to obtain an exit day we would want.

Exit quotas are, as you know, part of a system to keep the experience pleasant for all. People approach rules differently, of course, but I like to think they are there for the greater good.

I had my exit permit checked on my way out last year by an inyo ranger. My understanding from the rangers is that if you have to leave a day early or late due to an emergency (weather, injury, a bear got your food...), they understand. Calculated violations are a different ball game, though, I would think.

Tricia, where are you entering to have such a short trip?

The quota for exit permits is 25 per day, and 40% (10) are held for walk-in requests. Walk-in requests for trail entry permits are normally made available the day before the entry date. However, I just don't know how they handle the 10 walk-ins on the exit permits, since the day before, all those who could use the permits are somewhere on the trails.

You should call the Wilderness Permit Office at 760-873-2483 and ask when and how those walk-ins are made available.

Ask about noshows, too. People often get reservations 6 months in advance, and then they can't make their trip, or some members drop out. These people often do not modify their reservation until they show up to get their permits.

And finally, watch the online system in the final two weeks before your trip, as sometimes good people WILL log in and drop their reservations.

Stellar attitude -- should be posted at every trailhead & station.

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

We are planning on entering at Cottonwood Pass, hiking north in thr Pacific Crest Trail. I think our second night is at Guitar Lake and then on the third day we want to hike Whitney and exit the park.
