A young lady is missing on Mt. Hood. This is similar to the Jessica Garcia rescue reported here on the Zone.

Mary Owen, however, is an experienced hiker (she has hiked the PCT), but in this case she was not reported missing for most of a week. Hopeful for a good outcome.

"Authorities are searching for a hiker on Mount Hood who was last heard from on Sunday and is without her backpack."

There is more info here.

"She loves challenges, and is known by her Pacific Coast Trail hiking buddies as "Dare-Devil" or "DD" for short."

This is the complete comment posted by her uncle...

"Mary Owen's Possible Location Pinpointed by Intuitives
March 22, 2013

I am Mary Owen's uncle on her mother's side.

I've been on risky hikes myself.

I also have a couple of friends who are intuitives, and I asked them if they might help pinpoint where Mary is. They helped find a missing person eight years ago.

Over the course of about 2.5 hours, they provided the following description, ending with a GPS location of where she is likely located right now. (Some of this description comes from my own perceptions.)

They said that she has been planning this hiking trip for a long time. She loves challenges, and is known by her Pacific Coast Trail hiking buddies as "Dare-Devil" or "DD" for short.

He plan was to go North-West-West, in the snow, across challenging terrain, to a destination near 45.370724,-121.82098, where she could pick up Muddy Fork Rd.

However, about half way there, going fairly straight as the crow flies, while climbing out of a ravine, she injured her left foot, so she could not walk.

Though she left one pack in the car, which the police found parked at Timberline Lodge and Ski Area parking lot, she took another pack with her, which included a space blanket ("Silvery Cocoon"), which has helped keep her warm.

She is confident that she will be found, and has been in a good mental state.

She has a means of attracting a search party to her, once they are near enough. Fairs? Smoke? Ground drawing?

Her phone isn't going to be of any help in locating her.

There is water nearby, though she might not be able to get to it.

Though she has been cold, she is not dying, and this will end well.

Presently, Mary may be located in the vicinity of 45.350162,-121.783471 not far from the top of that ridge.

I have submitted this information to my sister and to the Sherriff's office conducting the search. I hope they'll at least do a fly-over of the location my friends gave.

I cannot tell where the fact leaves off and the story-telling begins -- is all of this "she is" and "she has" commentary from the psychics? Is it known for a fact that she is injured, or is that part of the conjuring?

For what it's worth, here's a map with center crosshairs on the location:

Not much detail, here's the article.

I wonder where they found her with respect to the predictions that were suggested by the mediums?

Wouldn't it be crazy if they were right?

Yay!

Now that she's found, we can go all snarky on the "Intuitives".

Anybody notice that the uncle dated the comment 2 days before she went hiking...

Sandy Glacier appears to be about 4 mi due North of where she left her car, and the predicted location is just north of due west, about 5 mi, from her TH. Amazing, huh?

Apparently, she survived by building a snow cave. Details here.

If only....

Maybe her dad will buy her a SPOT.

It is just my opinion, but people who head out alone these days should take one along. They don't even need to use it ...unless there is trouble. But then, being out alone, using it periodically would sure enable searchers to zero-in.

"Mary Owen was surprised by a whiteout"

Imagine that: an unauthorized whiteout on a big mountain in winter.

Solution: carry a SPOT!

Why yes, of course I am being cynical. I tend to get that way when read lines as quoted above and the word "SPOT" enters the conversation.

I don't carry a SPOT. I don't want to have to depend on a mommy-button-cum-technological failure. However, I DO leave a hiking plan, a bail-out time plan/come search HERE if you don't hear from me by this time plan -- even for dayhikes, a post-it on my windshield: after this date call here plan..blah-blah-blah....and if all fails, bring on the crystal balls.

Maybe her dad will buy her the ten (or so) essentials, or at least the map and compass, and any one of a zillion books out there that addresses the four or five rookie mistakes she made.

To play a bit of devil's advocate: is there any evidence that those who carry electronic devices (cell phones, GPSR's, sat phones, various electronic signaling devices) take extra risks as a result?

Yep, I do. Wouldn't take off on a multi-day solo cross-country hike without my SPOT. Otherwise, I'd be more apt to stay on trails at least.
