My first trip, of hopefully several, to the Lone Pine/Bishop area this year will be to hike White Mtn. I know it varies from year to year, but in general, when is the road clear of snow? I'm just trying to get a general idea so that I can start some preliminary planning.

Thanks!

Depends...this is always the answer. If we get snow late it can screw your plans up.

I have done it in mid-June. There was still snow on the upper mountain that was easily avoided by leaving the road and scrambling up the last couple of hundred feet to the summit.

The best place to find info on the Bristlecone Pine area and roads is the ranger station in Bishop. I've called a few times to find out when they open the gates, etc.

I'm hoping to get up there in late May or June as well. I have permits for July 7th for Whitney and hope to see how I can handle the altitude prior to that, so it's not a surprise.

Steve, you have to be careful with the RS when it concerns White Mountain. I have gotten bad information a few times that makes me hesitant to recommend them.

You have to ask the multiple questions, one being is that from your personal experience. I was once told there was 10' of snow on the road where there was none.

Also, do not go by any recording.

Realize that it's not just melting the snow off the road that allows it to open up there. To minimize rut development, they usually wait until the road has dried out to open it.

This was posted on the WMRS FB page on 21 March:

If the current pattern persists, I would hope the road would be open sooner rather than later.

Here is the April 3rd report from White Mountain Ranger District:

Looks like a 2 mile pavement hike to the visitors' center.

Chance of a little more snow-fall tonight.
