Good Morning :)

I was fortunate enough to snag permits for a Whitney day hike on July 7th. The timing couldn't be more perfect, with the holiday and days off from work we can head up from southern California on the 3rd and we will have a few days at altitude. I'm looking for suggestions on where to stay. I'm hoping to sleep at the highest elevation possible (in a hotel/motel/cabin) Wednesday through Friday nights and then camp at Horseshoe Meadows Saturday night before our Sunday hike. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I love Rock Creek Lodge (about 10k) for that. Right near Mosquito Flats trailhead with great hiking options. I haven't stayed at Parcher's but that might be another option.

You might consider camping at Horse Shoe Meadows the entire pre-hike time.

The other options in the Bishop area are nice, but a bit of a drive back to Whitney Portal.

Isn't there a one night limit at Horseshoe Meadows campground? I would consider camping the entire time, but I'm not sure my husband would love that...lol. ;)

Brandy, there is a one-night limit, but the place is never full, and the rule seems not to be enforced. There are nice day hike opportunities there: Cottonwood Pass, Cottonwood Lakes, Trail Peak.

It's about 30 minutes down to Lone Pine, so you could head down for a big dinner at a restaurant, maybe a shower at the Whitney Portal Hostel, then back up to sleep at altitude.

Thanks for all of the information...I'm hoping I don't run into an issue with the campground being full since it's a holiday weekend.

BTW...I really appreciate this forum! I think I started lurking here two years ago when I applied for permits and didn't receive them.

That makes for a long, pre-dawn drive from HSM to WP on a Sunday morning of the hike...

You may consider a reservation at the Whitney Portal Hostel (760-876-0030) for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. You may want to consider a private room on the alley side of the hostel...Heck you might as well splurge while in the Holy City of Lone Pine!!!

Good luck on your hike and always have fun...

Journey well...

I was at Horseshoe Meadows last Labor day weekend and it was full and overflowing. We had to make new friends and share some space. It usually isn't full but a holiday weekend could be. I also think Rock Creek is a good option. Since you have a lot of time you should check out the bristlecone pine forest and that campground never fills up. The Grandview campground is at 8600 feet. There is no water and it's dry but you'll get to check out the bristlecone pines nearby which are the oldest trees in the world. You can drive to the end of the road and do some hiking up White mountain. I think the gate is well over 11000 feet where you can park. You can follow the dirt road all the way to the 14k summit.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. After consulting the husband who is along for the ride, we compromised and settled on Mammoth Village for Wed through Fri nights. We will head down to pick up our permits on Saturday morning and figure out where to stay pre hike. Maybe the walk in sites at the portal or the hostel. Hoping to stay at the hostel Sunday night after the hike.

I made it to the adventure 16 whitney clinic in west LA last night and had the pleasure of hearing Kurt Wedberg speak. I didn't think I could be more excited about Whitney but I am!

Kurt puts on the best Whitney Show. Any noob who has a chance should go see it. His show are so much better than what I have seen at REI.

I was actually looking for the REI clinics and realized I missed all of the dates. I think I googled whitney clinic and found the A16 one in west LA. There is another one on June 7th that I hope to attend.
