Burned spots from lighting strikes(?) at Horseshoe Meadows, CA. They are circled in red. They were HUGE, all over the place, and we never saw them inside fire rings. Plus, an electrical storm moved through the area 2 weeks earlier. Is there a name for these things?

If lightning hits sand, formations called fulgurites can be found beneath the surface.

Since they were "all over the place", I am thinking a work crew had come through and piled and burned any loose wood lying around the campground area.

I think a lightning strike spot hitting the ground, with all those trees around would be quite rare.

When did you take these pictures?
Is the Horseshoe Meadows road already open?
Is the campground area totally snow free?
Thanks

I think those pics are from last year. The road isn't open yet, but will be soon. (If you need more precise info, you can call the Inyo County roads department.)
