I didn't notice until today that several questions were posted in the "Shout Box" area to the left.

Everyone, please just ask in a forum. You will get answers.

Trying to answer....

Keep checking this Recreation.gov link. Somebody might release a slot or two.

Otherwise, just show up on Friday morning (5/24) at the Visitor Center and ask. There are nearly always slots available due to people picking up their permits and dropping a member or two. Also, on the morning of the 25th, the same should be the case. At 11 AM, there should be a batch coming available due to no-shows, as well.

If you will check the Unused Permits pages, you can see that even on Saturday of Memorial Day weekends, there have always been a few unused overnight permits left.

Bill, those cabins are privately owned on least USFS land. I believe the conditions dictated by USFS is that they cannot be used as rentals. I've seen one come up for sale once over the past years, but never have I seen any for rent.

I got this question as a Private Message:

> A few of us in the group are toying with the idea of being on the summit for sunrise on the 19th.

1. Does our entire group need to start the hike together, or are we 'legal' as long as we all enter the Whitney Zone on the 18th?

You aren't required to hike together. But if you do hike separately, each member should have a copy of the permit with the leader's name and the permit number. The leader is technically responsible for the group, though.

> 2. Could we start hiking on the 17th, say around 10 pm, as long as we don't enter the Whitney Zone until 12am? The idea would to setup camp around at Outpost around 2 or 230am, get some sleep, spend the day around camp napping/hanging out, then start for the summit around 10pm on the 18th.

Technically, yes, anyone can hike up to Lone Pine Lake point without any permit, and then continue up the trail beyond, at midnight. If you set up camp at 2-3 AM, be sure to be very quiet so you don't disturb the others already camping there.

I am thinking about heading up mid-week to hike part of the trail with the wife and kid. The kid will be riding in a child carrier. Do I need to get a permit for him too?

Hmmm... nobody has ever asked that before. If you could call the Wilderness Permit Office at 760-873-2483, that would be the final word. Please let us know what you find out.

I am thinking they would not require one for a baby.

By the way, you only need a permit if you go beyond Lone Pine Lake. And since it is so early in the season, you are likely able to go into the Visitor Center and pick up a free walk-in permit.

I tried calling twice today and didn't get connected to an actual person. I will try again tomorrow.

I talked with someone today. I was told everyone needs a permit, no matter what their age is.

Another question - am I correct in thinking that dogs are allowed on the trail, as long as they're leashed and they don't go up to trail crest?

TC is still Inyo NF. There is a sign at the top marking the entrance to SEKI.

New question asked:

Quote:
We are going on a day hike to Whitney this weekend. It is a group of 7, and the permit is on my name and from what I understand now only the group leader has the permit, as opposed to everyone having their own as it was before.(not sure if this is accurate but anyhow.)

I am very optimistic that we will all reach the summit, but in case one or two people get sick and choose to turn around, are they allowed to do so without the permit. (assuming the rest of the group and I continue on.)

In previous years, they gave each member a tag to hang from their backpack. If no tags are given out, you should at least hand each member a slip of paper with the permit number on it, in case they are asked, and they are not with you.

Groups split up all the time. Just DO NOT leave a slower hiker in your group behind you on the descent. That is just plain irresponsible, and the setup for a possible emergency. If they turn around and head back while you are ascending, that is completely different.
