I tried to book an overnight permit for this weekend to go over cottonwood pass for a quick 2 night trip but it says permits are not needed until June 28th. Are they really allowing people to stay overnight in the back country without a permit?

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Cottonwood Pass is often not over their quota, so they have likely set June 28 as the date when they start enforcing the quota. So all you need to do is walk into the Visitor Center S of Lone Pine and ask for the permit.

If you want to make sure, you can call the Wilderness Permit Office at 760-873-2483.

Thanks for the info Steve! I'll call them and see what the deal is and if they have any info on conditions.

I saw the trip report for NAP and OAP so I would assume they are similar.

A permit is still required but there is no quota. The FS wants you to be permitted in case you cause a SAR emergency for any reason. It gives them a place to start the search.
