I just took 15 of my firefighter buddies up for a one day assault on Whitney. With us we carried a large 5'x4' flag with our association logo and number on it for a summit shot. I lost this flag on our rapid decent of the Chute next to the switch backs. This happened yesterday, the 24th. If anybody comes across it, I would greatly appreciate its return!
We also lost some crampons from Elevation if those are found. In the same area.
Thanks again!

Bryan

What a misfortune! You have a good chance of getting your stuff back because it will be a busy weekend.

Be sure to post the same message over at the Whitney portal store message board:

I'm feeling your pain.

New idea:

Print up that picture in the form of a flyer and post it at your local upper end sporting shops (a huge portion of Whitney hikers come from socal). Add some sort of firehouse logo to the flyer if you can, so to appeal to the humanity of a person if he/she did find your flag. Almost everyone who hikes Whitney stops at the REI, A-16, and the local shops in Lone Pine. Give the Portal Store a call and ask them to post one in both the store and the Hostel (the hostel number is listed on the portal store forum + address to send flyer)

Finally, People are grubs for T-shirts and if I recall, every station/company has its own logo shirt. Offer a firehouse T-shirt as a reward.

I hope this helps.

As an aside...

About three years ago in April, a climbing partner was asked to look for a crampon that had been lost on Mt. Baden-Powell earlier in the season. We found it mid-way down the mountain no worse for wear.

It was left on his friend's desk the following Monday. His friend was a shocked to see as we were shocked to find it.

Don't give up hope.

Was the flag in some sort of container?

I would imagine a flag like this would be visible from Trail Camp if the winds have not blown it towards Consultation Lake.

No, it was folded in a traditional triangular flag fold. It was made of a soft silk as well, so it probably didn't keep its fold.
Again, I appreciate everybody's concern, and eyes on the trail!

Really seems odd that a flag was not noticed by anyone descending behind, or since. How did you determine that you lost it on the descent? Holding it your hand? In a pack? Pocket? Remember having or packing it at Trail Crest? Checking at the bottom of the switchers? Reason I ask is that I have found a few items many days or weeks after a trip that I thought I must have lost at a particular point only to have them turn up in the wrong pack compartment, under a car seat, in someone else's pack etc.

Wherever you go, there you are.

Hey Saltydog,

totally valid question. Happy to answer!
We stopped at Trail Crest to put on rain pants to assist in the descent of the Chute. After I put my pants on I re-packed and specifically remember bungeeing the flag onto the top of my pack. (I know. . . terrible idea. hindsight is 20/20)
It was gone when we stopped at the rocks at the bottom of the snow.
What is really weird is I led the descent down and 6 guys followed behind me. They found a bungee, but nobody ever saw the flag! Same story with another blokes crampons.
The flag was folded, so I can only assume it was pushed down into the soft snow, and until that snow fully melts, probably won't catch anybody's eye.
I appreciate you keeping the thread alive!
Thanks for the help!

We hope you recover it...

When you hang it high at the station, it will have a story to tell...

That flag will hold a special place in all of your hearts at the station...

Maybe future newbie(s) who join your team should take that flag to Whitney as part of the "initiation ritual" and carry one crampon. grin
