Here's a trip report of a family climbing the Mountaineers Route with guide Kurt Wedberg.

Climbing Mount Whitney With Kids

As interesting as the article are the comments. Many berate the author for taking kids on such a "dangerous" adventure.

Kurt is a good, safe mountain guide. Those kids were in far less danger than during the drive to Lone Pine.

Notice two safety precautions taken:

1) All the members of the party are very close together in the chute, thereby lessening the chance of being hit by a loose rock moving a terminal velocity. Good practice for any climber.

2) Kurt roped them up for the final push, even though the last 400 feet are "only" Class 3. Another good practice for people new to the game or uncomfortable with the exposure.

Do the guides requre you to be roped up with a group? The idea of using a guide might be appealing, but would be less so if being roped up was a requirement (for me)

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

I don't know the roping-up requirements of any of the local guides; Kurt's website might have more information.

For newbie's and children it is probably prudent. But as you say, it might be uncomfortable for some.
