I realize that this subject is probably beaten to death on this site, so forgive me: Is treating water on the MR still unnecessary? I had no problem doing the "dip & sip" 3 years ago, and Bob R had a very detailed overview of this. That said, has this changed in the last few years?

My only concern is getting water at LBSL and UBSL; the other places, with moving water, are no concern. I'd rather be safe than sorry, but I'd rather not carry a filter and waste my time pumping.

Thanks.

If you look up studies by Dr. Robert Derlet, a UC Davis doctor/researcher who sampled, tested, and published results of many Sierra streams and lakes, he found that lake water carried less bacteria than streams! It is thought that the UV from sunlight apparently kills the bacteria in the lakes as it sits exposed, while streams can pick up detritus as they bubble along.

So I dip from lakes as readily as streams.

Who woulda thunk? Lake water is cleaner than streams.

I'll leave the filter & pills at home.
Thanks a million, Steve.

I plan to carry my sawyer water squeeze bag, it's light and I've used it a lot.
