On a more serious note, I think I'm remembering correctly from my reading about high pointers that Granite Mountain is one of the toughest state high points to do.

A far more appealing route (at least for me) might be the following: http://www.climber.org/reports/2012/1809.html Also, provided no weather issues, it might be doable as a day hike. Finding that "perfect day" would be the trick. And, it is only 1,000 miles from the bay area
