Hello,

Back on September 14th, I heard an injured/stranded hiker yelling for help between Whitney and Trailcrest (below the trail) and ran to Crabtree ranger station, where who the ranger called SAR. A helicopter sent someone down on a role who plucked the hiker out of a chute.

Inyo Co. SAR tells me it wasn't them, therefore must have been Sequoia/Kings Cyn SAR.

Anyone know how the hiker faired?

Thanks,

Chris

If we weren't suffering with the ridiculous shutdown, we could check with Seki rangers about that.

Shutdown today, debt default tomorrow. Funny, but I don't recall that happening to Bush when he raised the debt through the ceiling. Or any other Republican president for that matter.

The federal deficit is actually shrinking much faster than predicted. It's still big, but headed in the right direction thanks to an improving economy, a slight increase in taxes, lower than expected growth in health care costs, and a small part from the sequestration. We should be happy with this course, not destroying it. Unless of course that's the real mission.

I wonder what it will take to tear people away from their phones, pads, & computers long enough to mumble a few words of discontent en masse?

It amazes me how obediently we are putting up with this nonsense as a population.

Where is the Occupy movement today?

I'm hoping somehow something will precipitate a quick movement to get rid of all of them.

Actually, there has been quite a discussion over at the Yosemitenews board on this very topic (it has sort of morphed into a very interesting political dialogue most recently)

As a population, our voting record is dismal, so I guess that we are getting what we deserve...head down....face in phone...shuffle, shuffle (damn! I see that "cell phone shuffle" all day long, and it is very unnerving.)

Living and then dead:

Rail commuters on phones didn't notice gun October 9, 2013

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO — The man drew the gun several times on the crowded San Francisco commuter train, with surveillance video showing him pointing it across the aisle without anyone noticing and then putting it back against his side, according to authorities.

The other passengers were so absorbed in their phones and tablets they didn't notice the gunman until he randomly shot and killed a university student, authorities said.

OK: I'm awake here! I just looked up from my phone and noticed something on my computer. This really bugs me and I AM NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY MORE!!! And that something is the title of this topic : "SAR Rescue". Like "ATM Machine". Or "MLB Baseball". Or "KFC Chicken". This going to be the end of Western Civilization as we know it.

Ah yes, the get rid of them all movement for the 1,204,543rd time. What this generally means is let's get rid of all the bums but mine...he/she is a really good person and is right on all the issues I carea about, it is the other 534 who are the problem.

This is exactly what the American public voted for in November 2012. They voted in a Democrat executive and senate and a Republican house.

I'm happy to "get rid of all of them". Unless I'm misinterpreting your post you want to make this a political discussion:me against you, right against left, etc. I'll happily vote against "mine". Now again tell us what "this generally means".

No Reno, it not you against me and it has nothing to do with partisan politics but I've been to the rodeo many times and this is how it works. There will be a few of these guys gone but nothing that will make a difference because that is how the system has been made to work.

Most people of happy enough with their guy, he votes right the issues 80% of the time, Maxine Waters isn't going to be replaced by Darrel Issa...and vice versa. It's the guy in the next district who is a bum who is a from the opposite party that I vote for most of the time.

I know Steve doesn't like to drift into polical bickering, and I hope this post doesn't do that, but it is relevant to the missing hiker post because we can't find out what happened because the website is shut down due to the shut down. These seem like "facts" to me but if they're too controversial, go ahead and delete this post to maintain order.

The discussion above refers to "gerrymandering" district boundaries to make "safe" districts. When that happens, a Congressperson gets more worried about a challenge from a more extreme faction within their own party than they are worried about the other party. The primary election becomes the deciding election. Compromise with the other party can look like betrayal.

The proliferation of "safe" districts happened to both parties to some extent after the 2010 census, but the Republicans did a better job of it. Now they're having a civil war amongst themselves, something the Democrats tend to do often. The very loud and well-financed Tea Party minority wing vs the rich white guy wing and whatever moderates are left in the party. Couple that with rapidly changing demographics and they've got some serious issues. The pollsters are trying to tell them you can't win a national election anymore counting only on middle aged white guys. They're chasing every other demographic group away with their policies and rhetoric, except maybe the elderly.

I make my case with Joe the Plumber. He's not an "official" spokesperson, but his recent statements seems to capture the true sentiment. It's refreshingly honest, even if it's disgusting to many (myself included).

Eventually people do get disgusted enough. That's what happened in California year after year of not being able to pass a budget without conceding to a handful of Republicans to get them to go along with the Democratic majority. Eventually, it shifted to a super-majority clean sweep of all Republicans from any position of power. They are irrelevant in California.

I personally think we need two healthy parties to make our system work properly, but when one refuses to play nice, they need a time out.
