I suppose I should have noted that the only major mistake I made this year was with the focus on some stitches. The first 6 weeks or so I would take my vertical shots by remetering and refocusing for each photo. This had the unfortunate problem of having some of the vertical shots choosing a close focus point and blurring the background. There are a couple wide angle shots where I just posted it anyway. Basically if you look close enough you may see a piece of the image out of focus along the complete vertical axis despite the rest of the image being in focus.

Hi Rogue,
Thanks for all the details. Great that you can plan some "leisurely" days, with arrival at day's destination by noon. Great opportunity to take some "thoughtful" pictures without feeling rushed. I need to adapt this perspective. Mostly I take my pictures "on the run", and we all know that this is not the best formula for good photographs.
I use Photoshop to create panoramas. You mention stitching your photographs together. What s/w do you use for that?
Again, really remarkable photographs. Just goes to show what can be done with a single lens.
I had not noticed the focus issue in any of your pictures, but I understand the issue. I experimented with image adjustments prior to stitching, but finally decided best to do the merge prior to any adjustments. Same concept, except you were doing it in the camera, while I was doing it after the fact.
Thanks again,
John

Yeah I spend allot of time out there being lazy. It's more like just living every day life out there for me rather than some major hiking adventure or challenge.

As for software I just use Microsoft ICE. It's free and easy to use.

if you shoot RAW, adjust before stitching, which lets you do additional exposure matching, fix color balance shift and other stuff. The merge is the last thing you want to do. ICE is a much easier to use application, but it forces you to open JPEGs, which makes only sense when you are shooting what your camera manufacturer's code monkeys figured would be a "good average" processing of the raw image. Most of the time that's junk, and once it is junk, you can't do much to fix that, as a JPEG is only a fraction of the original data recorded by the sensor.

If you want to make sure everything is in focus in a panorama, shoot manual focus, and if there is not enough depth of field, stack each frame with multiple different focus shots (google focus stacking). Then you have to stack each frame before you merge them into a panorama. Gets really tricky to track what's what, and that's definitely not something you'd do without tripod and a lot of time for a single image stitch. Gets real geeky at that point, so much so that I never did that myself. I've done stacks and stitches, but never stitched multiple stacks grin

The Vermillion Valley Resort at Edison Lake is quite the hiker haven. Lots of hikers hang out there and trade stories. Nice place to cool your heels ...and spend $$ too.

Rogue, did you do any fishing on those layover days?

Nope I didn't do that much fishing on this whole trip. I did some on the first couple of weeks and then didn't do much after. I only ate fish 3 times.

As for VVR I love hanging out around there. First I got in a day early so I did 2 layover days then when I got back out I did 3 days. and when I got back in again I did 3 days.

I was even considering instead of doing another major hike next year to just work at VVR helping build the new structures going in.

I was trying to do something different with the star gazing but it wasn't easy. I have allot to learn with that stuff.

I had a tripod but did not do that many star photos. Early season you have to stay up so late for it to get dark that I was just too lazy most of the time to mess with it.

You inspired me to open up the users manual for my Nikon D200. It has settings for interval timer/time lapse photos. Now I just need to get serious enough to do something with it. As you point out, much expermintation needed to figure out how to get good results. I liked the last 6 photos in particular. Nice effect with the light comming from the tent and your head lamp.

It's a bit difficult to get the focus right because star photos you typically focus at infinite but with you or your tent closer it's hard to get both right.

From looking at your map, did you not set foot on a trail at all that week? That seems to be some of the most remote backcountry in the Sierra!

No I didn't. That section I went 10 days without setting foot on a trail. Or even seeing one. The Kaweah Basin section later is also 10 days without seeing a trail.

Great colors (blues especially) in the first 15/20 photos. Might you be bumping the saturation?
Perhaps there should be a new trail named after the path you took on this weeks hike:-)
