Lol I have thought about the idea of after all these years of going so many places I should come up with a cross country hike that takes you to all the best places (in my opinion) in the Sierra. Even I would be interested in what I would come up with.

As for blue saturation I never turn that up at all. If anything I have to often turn down the blues.

Sometimes in order to have a proper exposure the sky gets under exposed and becomes a dark blue that I cannot help.

Do you normally use a UV lens filter?

No I use no filters at all. Just a straight lens. I used to use a polarizer for awhile but with 24MM it was a bit wide and you got the uneven sky effects. I have not used it on my 35MM yet.

Allot of people throw UV filters on their lens just to protect it from harm but for one I have never had anything impact my lens before and I don't like the idea of buying 1300 dollar lenses only to throw some cheap 20 dollar pair of glass over it.

Hi Rougue,
Really liked your Island Bird Lake and Moon Gazing photos. Great depth in the Island Bird Lake photos in particular.
Looked as though you stayed fairly high for this week. Most images well above tree line, and lakes at 10,000 plus.
Keep em coming.
Regards,
John

Yeah on those stretches I miss having a camp fire.

That was a cool area to go to. Such a feeling of no one being there before. I even saw a bear in the valley below which was cool seeing one in a more remote area.

Week 13 - Whew, lots of grey and brown, with a little blue and green thrown in. Still spectacular!. Lake Marion looks like a great spot to camp. Below the tree line, and I "guess" fairly isolated. Did you see many hikers in this area?

Week 14 - Great images at Upper Basin. Wonderful clouds and lighting (sunset pics in particular). Taboose pictures have great sense of depth. You also seem to be down to your "fighting" weight. How much did you lose on this trip?

I didn't see anyone at Marion this year. I went 9 days and only saw a single person on day 7 at the Dumbbell Lakes. That's allot better than last year when I saw 7 people in one day there.

As for weight I lost 45 pounds this year which was major. I started 20 pounds lighter than any other year yet I still lost that much. It brought me down lighter than I have been since I was about 17. I think I suffered from muscle mass loss also as my arms were looking really skinny by the end.

If I lost 45 pounds over a hike, they'd be rolling me out on a stretcher. I can't imagine doing something like this without having to carry massive amounts of food once I am down about 20 pounds, which I consider the max I could lose before losing strength as well.

I lost 13 pounds this summer in 2 weeks (and we ate well with several 'double meals'), and the end result was a weight I had not been at since I was about 25. Maybe 10 more pounds and muscle mass is going.

This also explains why PCT hikers tend to "binge" on things like 5 quart ice cream buckets. Gotta bulk up in a hurry to be out there this long without running out of fuel.

Exactly. When I stop in anywhere I eat all I can. At VVR I kept ordering their shrimp plate with 2 fish tacos on the side. One night they made the mistake of thinking I ordered the full shrimp dinner and a full fish taco dinner. Despite this I ate both meals completely and still had room for more.

At Parchers Resort you are more limited on food so I cooked up 2 cans of chili and put 11 slices of cheese into it and ate it all including another 5 slices of cheese plain. I also ate 2 cans of mixed fruit and a small bag of chips. I was hurting for about an hour after that but I needed it! I walked to the resort to clean my pot and they offered me a New York steak. Despite really wanting it I had to decline.

Hey RP, how was the hike up the south side of Mt Sill? The one time I did it, from the north, it was pretty dicey.

Congrats climbing a big fourteener!

Sill was a bit rough. After the very long tedious talus slog to get to it's base your given the option to go up 3 or 4 chutes. I took the one on the right and half way up crossed over to the next one on the left. This ended at a choke point with some vertical class 5 climbing. After a couple attempts I had given up on it and finally I gave it one more shot on this slab of rock that is protruding with a single crack for hand holds and a single foot hold. My intent was to shift my body a bit sideways in order to shimmy over to some better holds but as I did so my only foot hold broke loose violently and my body slammed down hard on the face of the rock which I had maintained my hand holds but it left a gash from my waist to the center of my chest. Now that the route was completely impossible without the one foot hold I began searching for other routes. I had started up another class 5 face when I decided that the sort of climbing moves that were needed to get up this face was completely crazy without being roped up as a fall would be fatal. Finally I was able to hook out around some rocks and take another vertical class 5 bit of rock but before I made it out of this I had a hand hold break violently causing me to cut my hand some and I had to friction climb up a notch in a rock to finally get back to class 3 and on to the summit.

Of course on the way down I took another route which was the first chute directly off the summit which was a mid class 3 way down.

Whoa! Glad you found an easier route down!

If one could find that route going up, it sounds like it wouldn't be that bad.

What you went up was worse than the north side.

Yeah if you simply take the chute on the far left then your fine.

I have to admit I didn't do as much research as I should have on a number of peaks and routes I took this year which had me in all sorts of sketchy situations.

Striped Mountain was the same where I just thought you could follow the NW ridge to the top but I ended up in a class 5 vertical chimney that required more than once to use full friction climbing with your legs with one foot forward and the other behind you. I have to admit I was scared but underneath that fear was the feeling of having fun.

Do recognize your route up Sill in any of these photos? Climbing starts on page 3:
