Wilderness Travel Course (WTC)?

I need a gift for my husband and he’s been backpacking for a few years now and he’s always lurking on this board.

I was thinking of getting him Wilderness Travel Course (WTC)
http://www.wildernesstravelcourse.org/

The Course Starts Jan 8, 2014.

We live in Santa Monica and the course is taught nearby in West LA – so it’s convenient for us.

Does anyone have any reviews or opinions on this Wilderness Travel Course?

Thanks,
Linda

I saw a recent commentary somewhere... Is it offered by the Sierra Club? I think they give people a lot of basics, which are excellent. The only downside I saw is that they no longer give any instruction in the use of ice axe or crampons, probably due to liability reasons.

Sierra Mountaineering International (SMI) run by Kurt Wedberg operates winter mountaineering courses that cover that, I think.

Another option you might want to consider is the Yosemite Hige Sierra Camps: http://www.yosemitepark.com/high-sierra-camp-trail-descriptions.aspx
The lottery for 2014 is already closed, but you can always apply for spots that open up due to cancellations. I think this opens up in Feb.
These are "catered" hikes, so no need to schlep tents and food. Typical 10 miles/day, and there are options on the number of days and camp sites visited. Since these are "catered" you might want to consider joing your husband (or not, depending on your preference).
These are not so much "instructional" hikes, but camping for those that like to hike, but do not like to schlep the gear, and prefer hot showers and cots vs. a dip in the lake and sleeping on the ground.
