I hiked Skyline with a group of 7 this past Saturday. I knew the pace would be slower than normal, so I took the opportunity to confirm some information on the 'map' I've been working on.

Here are some of my favorite pics from the hike. If you click on them, it will send you to the full (long winded) trip report as well as more photos:

Nice breakdown of the trail on your site, like the map and the landmarks. I'll be putting some of this info to the test when I take a couple of buddies up the trail for the first time on April 26th.

A little basic info: where is this? You know how many trails in this country go by the name "Skyline?".

Sorry Saltydog - this is the Skyline Trail in Palms Springs, which is the 'tough' part of the Cactus to Clouds hike.

Thanks Brad. Did you go through the 'quiz?' It's a bit annoying, but I hope people understand why it is there.

Please report back on how the info works out for you. I am getting over a cold, but I am tentatively planning on hiking Skyline on the 26th too, hoping to do it with a couple of first timers. What time do you plan on starting? Are you starting at Ramon Road?

63Chevyll: Yes I did take the quiz, and yes it is annoying, but as you said, I understand the reasoning. Even on easier trails down here in San Diego I'm always shaking my head at people who are not prepared or have no idea of what to expect on a hike, especially in this day and age with the internet. That's why I have my web site set up http://www.ihikesandiego.com/, to give people as much information as possible on trails so that they go in with eyes wide open and know what to expect.

I was planning on hitting the trail at 4am, and taking off from the Museum.

If you see three guys on the trail, I'll be the one with the red Osprey Atmos 65 strapped to his back. - say hi.

Nice website and pics. I will have to spend some time checking it out!

What is your expected pace for the hike?

If I go, I expect to have one or two other guys with me. I am the guy on the right in this pic:

and will be carrying a red and grey REI Venture pack:

I am glad you found the information useful - I spent lots of time working on it. I am working on an updated version of the map that will hopefully be a little easier to read.

I'm not sure what my pace will be, I'm usually around 18-20 min mile hiking, 30 when its really steep, and this is the first time we will be doing this hike so it remains to be seen.

That's me. I'll be on the look out for you, or as much as you can at 4am in the morning

laugh

I'm still not sure if I'll be out there or not. This cold has been hanging on for two weeks now.

The weather could be interesting Saturday.

If you've done Baldy via Bear Canyon, take your time and double it. That should give you a rough estimate of what you could do your first time up.

Do you have a GPX file of the hike?

Yes, I'm keeping an eye on the weather, last year during the government shutdown we where heading up Whitney expecting only a few inches of snow but stopped at trail camp because everyone we ran into coming down said they where hitting knee to hip high snow drifts at 13,000 and no one seemed to be getting to the top, we will try again this summer and see where we get to. I went up Marion Mountain trail the first time with a little bit of snow on it and that made the trip great, 3 liters lasted me the whole hike. This should be interesting. Do you have a GPX file of the hike ? I do not. If you have one that would be great. pacatc@gmail.com

One of my favorite shots looking down from the top of San Jacinto I was lucky enough to get with just a little wind blown snow at the top.

Brad, I sent you an email a few minutes ago. That's a great pic.

My father-in-law (from NH) and I were going to hike Whitney last year during the shutdown. We cancelled because of the snow reports.

I don't know what people are thinking going up in this heat! Fri, Sat & Sun it was over 100.

Whoa! When it is that hot, I would think it would be better to start at 4 AM (or earlier) and get up high quickly to get above the heat.

I see from reading the post that two of the groups didn't have enough water. Really bad planning.

Very irresponsible and poor planning. Whenever I read stories like this, I think about NH's 'negligent hiker law.’

The general consensus is that if it is going to be hotter than 90 degrees in Palm Springs, don't do it. The rocks hold the heat even when he air is cool at night- you can feel the heat coming off of the rocks.

I've done the trail in May before on a day that was 90+ degrees in Palm Springs. We started at 3 am. I'm not a fast hiker, but by 9 am I was regretting the decision. We made it just fine, but I ended up carrying a friends pack (he had bad cramps) for the toughest/hottest parts of the trail... about 2400 ft of climbing in just over 2 miles!

So, when are you coming down south Steve to join in on the fun? grin

Ha! My parents attended college in La Verne (late 20s or early 30s) and climbing Mt Baldy was the thing to do. ...or maybe it was my older siblings in the 50s.

But there are too many attractive places in the Sierra that I have yet to see/do.

...but thanks for the invite. wink
