I am going to be hiking Whitney next week. Will be flying in so I have to buy white fuel when I get to LA. Even the smallest quart can will be much more than I need and I will have to leave behind. Does anyone know if there is a program where I could leave for the next hikers (or vise verse). I hiked the Grand Canyon a few years ago and ended up leaving over half a quart as well. I always thought it would be a good idea to have some type of exchange program.

I wish the world was that organized, but I've never heard of a program such as you describe. White gas should be used within a year, so storage and disposal issues would make it less beneficial.

You could look around the Portal campground for someone with an old Coleman stove or lantern - bet they would appreciate your extra fuel.

Ask at the Portal store, provided it's open when you are done with your hike, if you can leave it. It's amazing what ends up at the store.

Yes, I ran into someone on a Yosemite trip who was still burning down a canister that they picked up for free at the Portal Store (left at the store by someone who used it a few times on a Whitney summit hike but still had plenty of fuel left).

Lots of fuel at the Hostel, as well. I left my extra there last year.

Last resort, put it in your rental car. You didn't read that here.

As the saying goes, your mileage may vary.

I've found that the rangers at the Visitors Center (where you get your permit) willing accept leftover stove fuel.
