This will be my first attempt at climbing Mount Whitney. I have been training for a couple months and feel I am in shape for the trek. (Have run marathons and been on multiple hikes). This will be my first snow/ice climb. I have been watching videos and speaking to fellow climbers to increase my knowledge. Have all the equipment.I know there is nothing like the expeience of doing it though. My fellow hiking partner, who has done this climb before and that has experience will be unable to make the trip. Its disappointing because i Have looked forward to the trip and have been training. Being that this will be my first time, want to get peoples opinion if I should make the trip and think it is safe to climb the chute? Thank you for this forum it has been a great help.

Hi BohdiZhafa,

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately, the chute (IMO) is not the place to learn how to use your equipment. People have died on the chute leading up to Trail Crest.

That doesn't necessarily mean that you should cancel your trip. You could plan on hiking to Trail Camp - you'll gain some familiarity with the trail and the views are incredible.

I am in a similar situation. I have permits for June 3-4 and my father in law will be here visiting from NH. We are currently looking at alternate hikes b/c we do not have experience with snow climbing equipment.

Agree. Sorry to be negative, but it's a bad idea to try to teach yourself snow skills on the highest mountain in the continental U.S., never mind on a chute that in places approaches 40 degrees. And in the unlikely event that you were able to get up to Trail Crest, down would present its own dangers and challenges.

If you really want to climb a 14er and learn snow skills at the same time, try the 3 day/2 night climb of Mt. Shasta offered by Shasta Mountain Guides, http://shastaguides.com/.

Don't be sorry. This is serious business.

People going this early had all winter to acquire the skills and did not. It's not like the information about this mountain in early quota season is a secret.
