I would like to know if there are bear boxes available in the parking lot for day hikers to store food and coolers? We are hiking Whitney next weekend and have a campsite booked at Whitney for the night before our hike but not the day of the hike so we won't be able to use the bear box in the campsite. after the hike we have reservations at onion valley for 2 more nights. We will be bringing coolers and food for the next 2 nights of camping at onion valley so we will need a bear box to store them in.
the bear boxes are there, but tough to trust others as many don't close them. Lost a bunch of stuff to Mr Bear a couple of years back. If you can leave it in town, or no value, probably better... I still haven't seen that bear walking around with my running shoes on. He should have needed to run after eating everyone's food

Joe, are you saying you put running shoes in the bear locker?
If a box is full, I will pull out non-food items to put my food in there. If people don't like it, too bad. Those boxes are for food and smellies not firewood, books, full packs, etc. I've taken out a lot of water bottles over the years.
