Anyone have any info on the mountaineers route right now. Going down to Whitney in the next few weeks June 12-14th and wanted to see if it would be possible to climb up it and worth skiing down. From the looks of the webcam the mountaineers route is still holding some snow.

People mention the Chute and glissading the chute - is that the same large chute that is the mountaineers route - I guessing its a different one.

Seeing also if we need to change our entrance location on the permit if we do choose that route.

Both the Main Trail and the Mountaineers Route start at the same trail head. Both require the same Day Use permit if you are only going in for the day. However, overnight use requires two separate permits -- Whitney Main Trail, or North Fork Lone Pine Creek.

As for skiing, most people will do that in February or March. Neither chute is very good for skiing, and this late, the sun cups would be a huge problem. The MR chute is pretty narrow.

The "chute" to the west of the switchbacks of the Main Trail is more a wide slope than a chute. It melts out completely, so rocks will be your problem there.

Davey at the Whitney Portal Hostel would be the guy to talk to about the skiing. They try it every so often.

Thanks for the info. Yeah thought it might be late in the season. I'll give the guy at the hostel a call in the future.

Anyone know how the conditions are? Snow all the way up?

The webcam seems to show snow about 75% of the way to the top.

I was up on the Mountaineers Route last weekend. Keep your skis at home. Not worth skiing down right now. The snow field in the gully above Iceberg Lake was icy, pitted, post-holed and not great skiing conditions. We glissaded the lower portion on our way back from the summit in the afternoon. Roughest ride in a long time, the snow was bumpy and hard on the tail bone. BUT, still an awesome hike.
